One of the key partners in this process is the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Currently, WWF is implementing the project “Enhancing climate resilience of mangrove ecosystems and local communities in coastal areas of Ca Mau province”, implemented in Ngoc Hien district (old), with funding from the UBS Optimus Foundation UK. The project is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
People in Dat Mui commune harvest aquatic products under the mangrove canopy, this is one of the sustainable livelihood models supported by the WWF project.
Over the course of its implementation, the project has contributed to improving people's livelihoods through sustainable aquaculture models under forest canopy (IMA), applying better management measures (BMP), while strengthening the capacity to manage and protect mangrove forests, and improving resilience to the impacts of climate change. This clear effectiveness is also the basis for WWF and Ca Mau province to continue to develop the next project to ensure continuity and expand the scale of support.
Facing the risk of a series of negative impacts: saltwater intrusion, high tides, rising sea levels, river and coastal erosion, natural disasters, and water security, Ca Mau has identified climate change response as one of its long-term strategic tasks. The province is focusing on developing a green economy, a circular economy, reducing emissions, and improving community resilience.
Ca Mau is striving to build a green and sustainable development model within the framework of the "Green City" Campaign initiated by WWF.
In particular, Ca Mau is expected to participate in the "Green City" Campaign initiated by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), which is considered a strategic step, contributing to realizing the goal of green and sustainable development.
This is also a global initiative launched in 2011, attracting more than 900 cities in 70 countries to participate, to honor and support localities that are proactive in their efforts to reduce emissions and adapt to climate change.
By participating in the campaign, Ca Mau and other localities will be supported to systematize the database of policies and information related to adaptation and mitigation of natural disasters and climate change; and will be supported with resources and techniques to build a comprehensive map of greenhouse gas emissions, and determine the carbon absorption capacity of important local sectors. From there, propose appropriate emission reduction solutions to achieve the "Net Zero" target by 2050.
WWF representatives worked with the Union of Friendship Organizations of Ca Mau province to discuss plans to mobilize and build new projects in the next phase.
According to Associate Professor Dr. Tran Anh Tuan, lecturer at the University of Sciences , Hue University, participating in the "Green City" Campaign will help localities access advanced environmental management tools, improve their capacity to respond to climate change and attract international resources to serve the goal of sustainable development.
Sharing the same view, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Huong, Vice President of the Provincial Union of Friendship Organizations, said: "The Provincial Union of Friendship Organizations will actively coordinate with relevant departments, branches and international partners such as WWF to develop and implement new projects on protecting mangrove ecosystems and adapting to climate change. Participating in the "Green City" Campaign will help the province further promote green and sustainable development efforts."
With the support of prestigious international partners such as WWF, and the determination of the provincial leaders and people, Ca Mau has every basis to realize the goal of green development, for a sustainable future for future generations.
