Railway industry adds more cars to 22 trains when Vinh airport closes

After Vinh Airport temporarily closed from July 1 for a six-month upgrade, the Railways quickly increased the number of carriages for 22 passenger trains passing through Vinh Station every day. This adjustment not only aims to reduce the pressure on people but also ensures a stable flow of passengers during the summer tourist season and the year-end holidays.

Since the end of June 2025, Vietnam Railways Corporation has approved a plan to add 3 more cars to 22 passenger trains passing through Vinh Station, Nghe An. Each train will thus increase from 12 to 15 cars, helping to increase the capacity to serve about 200 more passengers per trip.

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Thanh - Head of Vinh Station said that the addition of train cars is to relieve pressure when the number of passengers coming and going from the locality increases, especially in the context of Vinh airport temporarily suspending operations. Adding more cars is an urgent solution in the current period and is expected to be maintained until the end of 2025, when the airport is completed upgrading.

Vinh Station currently receives about 3,000 passengers per day, which can reach 5,000 during peak times. Passenger trains running through the station include SE1 to SE12, SE17 to SE20, SE23-SE24, NA1-NA2 and QB1-QB2. According to the Railway Industry, the carriage connection is being implemented simultaneously on all routes to ensure maximum service for travel needs from Nghe An to other provinces and cities.

Mr. Cao Ngoc Tuan - Head of Vinh Railway Transport Station said that summer is also the peak tourist season, combined with the number of passengers diverted due to airport closure, so adding more cars is necessary to avoid overload. Adding more cars will both support people's travel and take advantage of the opportunity to stimulate demand for railway transport.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhung, residing in Truong Vinh ward, Nghe An shared: “I planned to go to Ho Chi Minh City to visit my grandchild, but because the airport was closed, I chose to go by train. Although it takes more time, the train is safe, the ticket price is cheaper than the plane, suitable for an elderly person like me.”

The flexible and timely adjustment of the Railway sector is one of the practical solutions to share the transportation burden when the air route through Nghe An is temporarily suspended. After Vinh airport resumes operation, the Railway sector will continue to assess the demand to adjust the appropriate operating plan.

Since July 1, Vinh Airport in Nghe An Province has officially closed for construction of upgrades such as runways, terminals, and parking lots, with a total cost of nearly VND1,000 billion. Before the temporary suspension, the airport operated about 15-20 flights/day, up to 40 flights during peak periods, serving about 2 million passengers/year. After the renovation, the airport's capacity is expected to increase to 3.5 million passengers/year.

While waiting for the project to be completed, passengers who need to fly from Nghe An will have to move to neighboring airports such as Tho Xuan, Dong Hoi or transfer to other means of transport such as trains, buses, private cars...
