Unique fashion collection for people with disabilities

Nguyen Chau Phuong, a fashion design student at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education, has turned her personal experiences into a meaningful project: a collection of practical clothing for women aged 18-25 with disabilities.

Passionate fashion design process

Phuong’s inspiration came from the moments when she helped her grandfather, who had muscle weakness and difficulty moving, and her maternal grandfather, who had difficulty with hand contractures, to get dressed. Those times of support, even though they were just fleeting thoughts, sparked in her a passion for designing clothes that were not only comfortable but also fashionable, helping people with disabilities confidently express their personalities.

In addition, the optimistic and self-beautifying videos of Ms. Khuyet (real name Anh Thu) with more than 230,000 followers on TikTok, a person with physical disabilities but with extraordinary will to live, also inspired Phuong to carry out this project.

“Disability is just a form of body diversity. Everyone has the right to express themselves through clothing,” Phuong affirmed. Phuong’s project started in September 2024 and will be completed in June 2025. Inspired by the elegant beauty of the moon and minimalist style.

Phuong’s creative process is meticulous. She starts with 20 sketches, then selects four designs to bring to life. Each design incorporates features such as easy-to-use velcro and magnetic buttons, and a flexible shape to suit the wearer’s specific needs.

Phuong chose a personalized approach, selecting models in advance, meeting them directly to study their body structure and mobility difficulties. This approach ensures that each outfit is not only comfortable but also helps the wearer feel more confident. “There are very beautiful models but limited in functionality. The four models made ensure a balance between aesthetics and functionality,” Phuong shared.

The collection uses carefully selected materials such as wood grain tapta, cotton and silk... fabrics that do not wrinkle, suitable for people who sit for long periods of time or do daily activities. These materials are in harmony with the minimalist style, bringing practical, elegant designs, neat lines and delicate beauty.

Shine in your own way

Phuong is inspired by the independence and resilience of people with disabilities: “I admire the way they face and overcome challenges in life.” Phuong’s collection helps the wearer feel confident and fashionable.

One of Phuong’s models, Nguyen Phan Lan Anh, (23 years old), who was born with a motor disability that caused muscle atrophy in her limbs and difficulty in walking and grasping, had the opportunity to step onto the catwalk for the first time. For Lan Anh, this experience was a turning point. “This is an opportunity for me to express my personality and shine in my own way, something I never thought of before,” Lan Anh said.

The project, which cost about VND30 million, was Phuong’s biggest passion. There were times when she felt “lost” and had difficulty determining a specific goal. However, her determination to create meaningful change helped her overcome it. “This is not just about clothes. It’s about giving people the freedom to express their true selves,” Phuong affirmed.

Phuong’s minimalist designs give young women with disabilities the opportunity to express themselves with confidence. After graduating, Phuong plans to continue developing applied fashion, hoping to expand her designs to serve more types of disabilities once she has accumulated enough experience.

Through this collection, Phuong not only creates clothes, but also builds a playground for disabled people like Lan Anh to confidently step onto the stage. For Phuong, fashion is not just about appearance, but a way to inspire and celebrate human diversity.

Ms. Le Thuy Trang, Deputy Head of the Fashion Design Department, Faculty of Fashion and Tourism , Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education, commented: “Phuong's graduation project is a harmonious combination of aesthetic thinking, practical application and responsibility to the community. Inspired by the image of the moon combined with a minimalist style, Phuong effectively exploited the elements of material, structure and shape to create adaptive clothing designs for women with mobility disabilities. This is a rather disadvantaged group, and has received little attention in the fashion field.”

According to Master Trang, through the flexible application of traditional 2D design techniques and modern 3D technology, Phuong not only demonstrates solid professional skills but also reveals a profound and humanistic design mindset. The topic not only has academic value and practical application, but is also an important first step, opening up the potential for further research on fashion design for the community in the future.
