International tourists enjoy OCOP fish sauce products of Cat Hai district
Promote local specialties
On the second visit to Cat Ba, instead of choosing familiar island tourism products, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thom's family (Cam Le district, Da Nang ) experienced the tour "A day as a beekeeper" at Cat Ba Forest Honey Cooperative.
The trip was very interesting as members were instructed on how to take care of bee colonies, harvest and enjoy pure honey in the middle of green nature. This is one of the successful models, attracting a large number of tourists, especially international groups and students, while increasing the economic value of Cat Ba honey products many times over.
According to Pham Tri Tuyen, Head of the Department of Culture, Science and Information of Cat Hai district, as of March 2025, the whole district has 31 city-level OCOP products (ranked from 3 to 4 stars).
These products not only ensure quality and origin, but also carry distinctive cultural and geographical elements. Among them, Cat Ba honey and Cat Hai fish sauce are two products that are effectively exploited in tourism activities. Instead of just selling products as ordinary goods, many agricultural production facilities on the island combine production with experiential tourism.
Tourists coming to Cat Ba can not only visit, but also transform into locals, directly participating in production processes such as exploiting wild honey, making traditional fish sauce...
These activities bring unique experiences, create unforgettable impressions for visitors, and help them understand more deeply the value of products as well as the natural potential and unique culture of the local people.
Currently, the District People's Committee is actively coordinating with the Department of Standards, Metrology and Quality (Department of Science and Technology) to conduct a survey of priority products to support the development and application of a product traceability system in the district by 2025 for products such as Phu Long crab, Cat Ba goat and honey, Pearl chicken, Gia Luan oranges... Thereby, opening up opportunities to develop more experiential and ecological tourism products associated with typical OCOP products of Cat Ba archipelago.
Unblocking the value chain of production, tourism and trade
In recent years, Cat Ba tourism has undergone strong changes, becoming an attractive destination for millions of domestic and international visitors each year. The development of tourism is a "golden" opportunity for OCOP products to reach out, not only in the domestic market, but also to international tourists.
However, tourism development associated with OCOP products in Cat Hai district in general and Cat Ba archipelago in particular still faces a number of challenges such as uneven product quality, lack of specialized human resources and environmental pressure.
Some small-scale production facilities have not yet met food hygiene and safety standards, the production process is still manual, lacking modern machinery. Building an experiential tourism model requires people not only to make good products but also to have communication skills, explain and welcome guests. This is also the weakness of many farmers or production facilities that have not been properly trained in tourism.
According to Vice Chairman of Cat Hai District People's Committee Hoang Trung Cuong, to promote tourism development associated with OCOP products, the district government is actively coordinating with the city's Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism to strengthen training and technology transfer for people, especially communication skills, tour explanation and product quality management.
The District People's Committee promotes investment in developing agricultural tourism infrastructure, building OCOP experience stops in eco-tours in communes such as Tran Chau, Gia Luan, Phu Long... The District continues to research and promote value chain linkages, encourage cooperative models and OCOP enterprises to coordinate with travel companies to bring products into tours. At the same time, strengthen communication and promotion of OCOP products, take advantage of digital platforms such as social networks and e-commerce platforms to spread product brands.
Developing OCOP products associated with tourism in the World Natural Heritage area is a model that harmoniously combines economy, culture and ecology. This is not only a direction that brings economic value to the people but also an effective way to promote the image of Cat Ba tourism to domestic and international friends, at the same time, it is suitable for the goal of developing green tourism on the island, developing the rural economy associated with sustainable experiential tourism, imbued with local identity.
