Hoi An ancient town is an attractive destination for international visitors.

From a century-old vegetable village to a green tourist destination

Early in the morning, the tourist destination of Tra Que Vegetable Village, Hoi An, welcomed quite a number of foreign tourists. Ms. Melinda, a New Zealander, was excitedly cycling around Tra Que Vegetable Village - a village with a history of more than 300 years specializing in growing vegetables. She shared: "I came here at 7am and joined the farmers in taking care of and harvesting vegetables, planting vegetables, watering, fertilizing and taking care of the plants."

Tra Que vegetable village covers an area of up to 40 hectares, with households rotating and intercropping more than 20 different types of leafy vegetables and herbs. This is the largest vegetable farm in the Quang Nam - Da Nang area, specializing in providing fresh, clean, organic vegetables all year round and is also a unique destination not to be missed when coming to Hoi An.

International visitors experience Tra Que vegetable village.

Not far from Tra Que is Kim Bong carpentry village, in Cam Kim commune, Hoi An city, formerly there were 4 families Nguyen, Chuong, Phan, Huynh all engaged in carpentry. Today, the village communal house still worships the founder of carpentry. Kim Bong carpentry is present in many architectural works such as communal houses, pagodas, wooden houses, street corners, household utensils, bearing the mark of Hoi An and Hue. Due to its location near the once bustling international port of Hoi An, the craft of building round boats to serve trade in Kim Bong carpentry village was once very developed.

Nowadays, along with the boat building and interior and exterior wood decoration, visitors to Kim Bong are also attracted by the wooden statues and exquisite decorations of all sizes, some costing only a few tens of thousands, some costing tens of millions. Mr. Vo Anh Phuong, a tourist from Hanoi, shared: “In Vietnam, there are many carpentry villages, but when I come to Kim Bong, I still see its own unique features. Today, I bought some small statues as gifts. Maybe in the near future, I will ask them to send me some large statues, after arranging a place to display them.”

Crowds of people flock to Kim Bong carpentry village to visit and experience.

Cam Thanh coconut forest, also known as Bay Mau coconut forest, is located about 3km from Hoi An city and has existed for about 200 years. Every day, the coconut forest area can welcome thousands of visitors, including Vietnamese and international visitors from Russia, China, India, Thailand, Japan, etc. When visiting Bay Mau coconut forest, visitors will be taken by enthusiastic and cheerful boatmen to impressive check-in locations to take photos, watch basket boat performances (also known as basket dancing, basket spinning), cast nets to catch fish, make handicrafts from coconut leaves and enjoy traditional local cuisine...

Leaving the coconut forest, visitors can visit Thanh Ha - a pottery village formed in the 16th century with many ceramic products that were once used to present to the king. Through many ups and downs, thanks to their dedication and love for the profession, the artisans of the village have preserved the soul and "revived" the beauty of the pottery village. Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen, Tuan Pottery store, said: "Now, when industry develops, tourism also develops, Thanh Ha ceramic products are decorative products, mainly serving restaurants, hotels or tourists".

The characteristic of Thanh Ha pottery is to keep the original red color of the terracotta, without any colored glaze on the outside. However, to meet the needs of tourists, Tuan Pottery buys acrylics to paint on the ceramic handicraft products, or for tourists to experience for themselves. With the characteristics of durable color, fresh color, long-lasting, after coloring and spraying a layer of glossy paint, Thanh Ha ceramic handicrafts have become an eye-catching picture, with prices ranging from 50,000 - 250,000 VND/product.

Tourism helps the villagers have a stable income, equivalent to 30% of the ticket price. In addition to sharing the ticket price, the pottery village receives attention from the local government for investing in infrastructure to attract tourists. Therefore, in general, the living standard of the people here is quite good, sometimes reaching 7 million VND/month.

Sustainable tourism development

Statistics from Hoi An city show that since the ancient town of Hoi An was recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and Cu Lao Cham was recognized as a World Biosphere Reserve, many new opportunities for tourism and service development have opened up.
