Located about 24 nautical miles southeast of the center of Quy Nhon coastal city, Nhon Chau island commune (commonly called Cu Lao Xanh, Quy Nhon City, old Binh Dinh) now belongs to Gia Lai province like a rough gem in the middle of the ocean.
From the mainland to Nhon Chau island commune, it takes about 50 minutes by speedboat and nearly 120 minutes by fishermen's transport boat.
Nhon Chau island commune has not been completely "awakened" by the flow of mass tourism , gradually becoming a favorite destination for those seeking peace and original beauty.
Nhon Chau has no luxurious resorts, no noisy tourist services, only rustic beauty, close to nature. Smooth white sand beaches, clear blue sea water, coconut trees leaning in the wind.
On Cu Lao Xanh Island - Nhon Chau, there are rocky reefs eroded by ocean waves over millions of years, creating impressive natural works of art.
There are coral reefs that are still quite intact and colorful.
On Nhon Chau island commune, there is also the Cu Lao Xanh Lighthouse, which is over 130 years old, located at an altitude of about 120m above sea level, and the National Flagpole, which affirms the sovereignty of the sea and islands. This is the first of seven national flagpoles built on the outpost islands near the coast of the country.
Nhon Chau island commune has more than 2,300 people with nearly 600 households and fishing is the main economic sector, supporting many generations of people here.
Life in Nhon Chau flows slowly and peacefully, a rare pace in the digital age. It is this tranquility that attracts tourists.
Currently, the government and people on the island are actively professionalizing accommodation activities, creating tours, routes, and unique tourist destinations of the island to diversify products and increase response capacity for sustainable tourism development.
Dawn breaks over the winding road on the island, night fishing boats bring back nets full of shrimp and fish. In the evening, the harbor is bustling with laughter, the image of fishermen drying fish and squid under the golden sunlight. All have become characteristics of Nhon Chau island commune.
In 2024, Mr. Ho Quoc Dung, then Secretary of the Binh Dinh Provincial Party Committee (now Secretary of the Gia Lai Provincial Party Committee after the merger), said that the lives of the people of Nhon Chau island commune have changed positively. The biggest concern of the provincial leaders is how to awaken the tourism development potential of the island commune so that Cu Lao Xanh becomes an attractive destination for domestic and foreign tourists.
“The tourism potential of Nhon Chau island commune is huge, currently we can choose 4 locations to immediately implement tourism projects, resort villas, entertainment areas, and coral viewing areas. The province is determined to attract investors by 2025 and have a number of new tourism products on Cu Lao Xanh island,” Mr. Ho Quoc Dung emphasized.
