Vietnam hopes Thailand and Cambodia avoid causing tension and resolve the issue peacefully and friendly.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son presented Vietnam's message on the Thailand-Cambodia tension when meeting the foreign ministers of the two countries on July 8.

According to information from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , on July 9, on the occasion of attending the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Malaysia, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son had a working breakfast with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Prak Sokhonn and Lao Foreign Minister Thoongsavan Phomvihan.

At the meeting, the three sides frankly exchanged and shared views on international and regional issues of mutual concern, and issues related to bilateral and trilateral relations.

Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son also shared that Vietnam will co-chair the Ministerial Conference of the Mekong-Japan and Mekong-Korea cooperation mechanisms.

In this role, Vietnam will actively call on partner countries to promote cooperation, increase business investment in Mekong countries, especially in high-tech fields, and improve the quality of digital human resources.

Previously on July 8, Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son met with the foreign ministers of Cambodia, Thailand and Laos.

At the meeting with Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa, the two sides agreed to soon develop an action program to implement the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for the 2026-2030 period.

Regarding trade, strive to achieve two-way turnover of 25 billion USD, and promote the effective implementation of the "Three Connectivity" Strategy, including the early establishment of a joint working group.

In addition, it is agreed to exploit new potential fields such as science, technology, innovation, digital transformation, digital economy, green economy, renewable energy, and energy conversion.

The two countries also pledged not to allow any individual or organization to use the territory of one country to oppose the other.

The Thai Foreign Minister suggested that the two sides discuss new ways to promote tourism cooperation, ensure food security and facilitate private sector cooperation.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son fully agreed and affirmed his support for tourism connectivity initiatives in the ASEAN region as well as promoting connectivity within the ACMECS framework. He also asked Thailand to continue facilitating the Vietnamese community in Thailand.

The two sides welcomed the enhancement of people-to-people exchanges and further promotion of the role of Vietnamese people in Thailand as well as Thai people in Vietnam, in order to actively contribute to the development of bilateral relations.

The two ministers agreed to continue to coordinate, consult and support each other at multilateral forums; strengthen solidarity and promote the central role of ASEAN, and coordinate views at the BRICS forum.

Responding to the Thai Foreign Minister's sharing about the Thailand-Cambodia situation, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son affirmed that Vietnam is closely following and hopes that the two countries will soon resolve the issue through peaceful dialogue, avoiding escalating tensions.

This will contribute to strengthening ASEAN solidarity and building a strong ASEAN Community, for a region of peace, stability, cooperation and development.

At a meeting with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Prak Sokhonn, Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son announced that Vietnam has recently implemented the merger of centrally-run provinces and cities.

This aims to reduce the number and increase the scale of administrative units, expand development space, and maximize local potential and advantages.

In response, Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn congratulated Vietnam on successfully implementing the revolution of streamlining the apparatus to enter an era of prosperous development.

He was also pleased to announce that President of the Cambodian People's Party and President of the Cambodian Senate Hun Sen will attend the 80th Anniversary of Vietnam's National Day next September.

At the meeting, the two deputy prime ministers agreed to focus on increasing delegation exchanges and high-level contacts, connecting infrastructure, transportation, and border gates, further promoting trade cooperation, enhancing people-to-people exchanges, and expanding tourism cooperation.

Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn acknowledged Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son's proposals on creating conditions for Vietnamese enterprises to increase investment in Cambodia, as well as for Vietnam to increase exports of cement, iron, steel, and construction materials to Cambodia.

The two sides actively and closely coordinate on land border demarcation issues, creating favorable conditions for Vietnamese people in Cambodia.

After Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn mentioned Cambodia's viewpoint on the tense situation between Thailand and Cambodia, Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son affirmed that Vietnam hopes the two countries will resolve the issue peacefully and amicably, strengthen ASEAN solidarity, and actively contribute to building a strong ASEAN Community and for a region of peace, stability, cooperation and development.

Laos will participate in the parade on September 2.

During the meeting between Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son and Lao Foreign Minister Thongsavanh Phomvihane, both sides expressed their delight at the strong and effective development of bilateral relations.

Two-way trade turnover in the first 5 months of 2025 reached 1.6 billion USD, an increase of 100.4% over the same period last year, aiming for the target of 5 billion USD in the coming time.

With the use of Vung Ang 3 wharf in Vietnam, Laos can expand international integration, facilitating the import and export of goods. Thereby, it will further highlight the economic cooperation and solidarity between Vietnam and Laos, clearly demonstrating the special trust and sincere feelings of comradeship and brotherhood between the two countries.

Discussing measures to promote cooperation between the two Foreign Ministries in the coming time, the two sides agreed to coordinate well in preparing for activities, visits and high-level meetings in the coming time, especially the 80th anniversary of the successful August Revolution and Vietnam's National Day, and the 50th anniversary of Laos' National Day.

Respectfully recalling the participation of the Lao armed forces in the parade at the 50th Anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification Day on April 30, the Lao Foreign Minister also said that Lao soldiers will soon also attend the 80th Anniversary of Vietnam's National Day, affirming that this has great significance for Laos and the special solidarity relationship between Vietnam and Laos.
