The My Son Cultural Heritage Management Board said that the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has just issued Decision No. 2104/QD-BVHTTDL allowing the Management Board to coordinate with the Institute of Archaeology to conduct archaeological exploration and excavation in the area between Tower K and the central tower group of My Son Temple Complex (Duy Phu Commune, Duy Xuyen District, Quang Nam Province in the past, now Thu Bon Commune, Da Nang City). The exploration and excavation period is from June 30 to November 30, 2025.

According to the decision, the exploration and excavation area is 770 m2 . Specifically, the exploration area is 20m2 (including 5 holes x 4m2 / 1 hole, from hole TD1 to hole TD5); the excavation area is 750m2 ( including 5 holes x 150m2 / 1 hole).

During the period of archaeological exploration and excavation, the licensed agencies must pay attention to protecting the stratigraphy of the relic; have the responsibility to propagate to the people about the protection of local cultural heritage, and not announce official conclusions without the agreement of the competent agency and the Department of Cultural Heritage.

The My Son Cultural Heritage Management Board and the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism are responsible for preserving and protecting artifacts collected during archaeological exploration and excavation, avoiding damage or loss of artifacts, and reporting to the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism on plans to protect and promote the value of those artifacts.

After completing the archaeological exploration and excavation, the My Son Cultural Heritage Management Board and the Institute of Archaeology must have a preliminary report and propose a plan to manage and protect the archaeological excavation area within one month at the latest and a scientific report within one year at the latest, sent to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

Before announcing the results of archaeological surveys and excavations, the licensed agencies must discuss and reach an agreement with the Department of Cultural Heritage.

As Van Hoa reported, previously, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism also decided to allow the My Son Cultural Heritage Management Board to coordinate with the Institute of Archaeology to conduct exploratory excavations of an area of 20 square meters in the area around Tower K (in 2023); to conduct archaeological exploration and excavations of 220 square meters in the area east of Tower K to clarify an architectural section of the road leading from Tower K to the center of My Son Sanctuary (in 2024).

Through the results of exploration and excavation in 2023 and 2024, it was possible to determine with certainty the structure of the path leading from tower K to the dry stream area to the East - about 150m from tower K.

Previous archaeological excavations have revealed the structure of the path leading from Tower K towards the center of My Son Sanctuary.

According to experts, this is the sacred path - the path that led Gods, Kings and Brahmanical monks into the sacred space at the center of My Son Sanctuary in the 12th century, which is known for the first time to domestic and international archeological and historical researchers.

From the research results in the area around Tower K during two surveys in 2023 and 2024, traces of architectural works never known in My Son in the history of the relic's existence up to now were revealed.

From there, a number of scientific issues were raised that need to be further resolved, including three key issues: First, it is necessary to clarify the scale, structure and appearance of the entire road in the overall context of the My Son relic site.

Second, related to Tower K and the path leading to the central area of My Son is a temple architectural ruin that was discovered during an exploratory excavation in 2018 in the vacant land in front of Nha Doi. According to local oral tradition, there used to be a Watchtower guarding the front of My Son Sanctuary.

Third, the road has been tentatively dated to around the 12th century, corresponding to the age of Tower K. However, according to the remaining inscriptions, the towers in My Son were built from the 5th century; the earliest remaining architectural vestige is Tower F1 dating from the late 8th century. So is it possible to find traces of a road leading to My Son Sanctuary before the 12th century?

From there, the Institute of Archaeology proposed that there should be a plan to continue excavation and research to clarify the scale, structure and appearance of the sacred road, bringing this relic from the underground of My Son to light so that domestic and international tourists, those interested in Champa cultural heritage in general and My Son in particular, can have a more thorough understanding of the relic.
