Realizing the opening of direct flights from Hokkaido to Vietnam

On July 9, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Foreign Minister Le Anh Tuan received Mr. Nakata Takahiro, Honorary Consul of Vietnam in Hokkaido, who visited and worked in Vietnam from July 8-11.

Deputy Minister Le Anh Tuan expressed his delight at the strong, substantive, effective and comprehensive development of the Vietnam-Japan cooperative relationship after nearly 2 years of upgrading the relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership. Economic cooperation continues to be an important pillar of the bilateral relationship, in which Japan is the number one partner in terms of ODA and labor, the third in terms of investment and tourism, and the fourth in terms of trade.

Local cooperation, cultural exchange, people-to-people exchange and human resource cooperation are increasingly close and effective. The Vietnamese community in Japan has reached more than 600,000 people, actively contributing to the socio-economic development of the two countries.

Thanking the Governor and the Hokkaido provincial government for their cooperation and support in arranging and preparing for the meaningful activities of Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung's delegation visiting Japan at the end of May, Deputy Minister Le Anh Tuan said that the visit contributed to promoting cooperation between the two countries in the fields of economy, trade, tourism, science and technology, innovation, etc.

Sharing information about the strategic "Quad Pillars" and the streamlining of the apparatus, implementing the two-level local government organization model from July 1, 2025, Deputy Minister Le Anh Tuan affirmed that these are breakthroughs to achieve the country's development goals, helping to simplify administrative procedures, giving more power to localities, contributing to improving the business environment, enhancing competitiveness, meeting the strong development requirements of Vietnam in the new era, the era of national development.

Deputy Minister Le Anh Tuan highly appreciated the effective and close cooperation between Hokkaido and Vietnam in many fields, especially in investment, trade, human resources, cultural exchange, tourism , etc. in recent times. He expressed his gratitude and appreciation for Mr. Nakata's efforts in performing the functions of Honorary Consul in his consular area, as well as his positive contributions in promoting cooperation and people-to-people exchange between the two countries.

The Deputy Minister suggested that Honorary Consul Nakata continue to promote cooperation between Hokkaido and Vietnam in areas where the province has strengths such as science and technology, semiconductors, etc.; promote the reception and training of high-quality human resources to serve the needs of Vietnam and Japan; and pay attention to and implement cultural cooperation, tourism, and people-to-people exchange activities between Hokkaido and Vietnam.

Honorary Consul Nakata and his delegation expressed their honor to have Deputy Minister Le Anh Tuan spend time with them during their working trip to Vietnam this time.

Reporting on the progress in the cooperation and exchange between Hokkaido and Vietnam in recent times, Mr. Nakata said that Hokkaido, Hokkaido Airlines and Vietnam Airlines Corporation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on implementing direct flights between Hokkaido and Vietnam, according to which charter flights will be implemented in the first year and a direct flight route from Hokkaido to Vietnam will be opened in March 2026, contributing to promoting people-to-people and cultural exchanges between the two countries.

Honorary Consul Nakata highly appreciated the contributions of the community of nearly 13,000 Vietnamese people living, studying and working in Hokkaido; affirmed that he will continue to closely coordinate with the Vietnamese Embassy in Japan in protecting Vietnamese citizens and creating favorable conditions for the Vietnamese community in the province, as well as organizing cultural exchange festivals between Vietnam and Japan to promote solidarity and understanding between the people of the two countries in general and between Hokkaido and Vietnam in particular.
