In recent days, the Can Tho City Department of Health has called on people to donate blood, in the context that the amount of blood at the Can Tho City Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital has only reached about 50% of the actual demand. This situation has caused many hospitals in the Mekong Delta region to face the risk of serious blood shortage.
In Ho Chi Minh City, the Ho Chi Minh City Humanitarian Blood Donation Center and the Ho Chi Minh City Blood Transfusion and Hematology Hospital also issued a notice calling on people to donate blood to ensure timely blood supply for the city and the southwestern provinces. Dr. Tran Thanh Tung, Director of the Blood Transfusion Center, Cho Ray Hospital, said that in the past 2 weeks, the amount of blood received has decreased by about 40%.
Analyzing the causes, Dr. Tran Thanh Tung said that summer is the time when people travel and students return to their hometowns, so the number of blood donors tends to decrease. Meanwhile, the demand for blood for treatment and emergency care has not decreased, even at a high level. In addition, since July 1, the merger of localities has also led to certain changes in the organization of humanitarian blood donation activities due to changes in the locality.

According to Dr. Tran Thanh Tung, previously, the Blood Transfusion Center, Cho Ray Hospital received blood from 5 provinces: Dong Nai, Binh Phuoc, Ba Ria - Vung Tau , Binh Duong, Tay Ninh. After Binh Duong province, Ba Ria - Vung Tau province and Ho Chi Minh City merged, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health and Cho Ray Hospital and related units agreed that from now until the end of 2025, the blood receiving area of Cho Ray Blood Transfusion Center will remain the same, ensuring smooth and effective medical activities.
The change in blood receiving area will be implemented in 2026. At the same time, Dr. Tran Thanh Tung affirmed that although the amount of blood received has decreased, the stock is still stable at about 4,000 units. Therefore, Cho Ray Hospital ensures adequate blood supply for hospitals in the Southeast region, serving the treatment and saving lives.
In the context of decreasing blood volume, many organizations and units in Ho Chi Minh City are actively encouraging their staff to participate in blood donation. On July 9, Gia Dinh General Hospital coordinated with Ho Chi Minh City Blood Transfusion and Hematology Hospital to organize a voluntary blood donation program with more than 150 participants, receiving 125 units of blood.
Participating in the program, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Nga (24 years old, Ho Chi Minh City) shared that donating blood is a simple and meaningful way to save patients, and is also a responsibility of young people to contribute to the community. Master - Doctor Le Hoang Quan, Deputy Director of Gia Dinh General Hospital, emphasized: Donating blood is a life-saving act and an important factor to maintain medical activities, especially in the context of many hospitals facing the risk of blood shortage today.
