Vietnamese youth chess team has important victories at the 2025 Southeast Asian age group championship.
Overwhelming results of young Vietnamese players
The afternoon of July 10, the 2025 Southeast Asian Age Group Chess Championship ended with the final games of the men's and women's blitz chess event in Malaysia. With blitz chess, young Vietnamese players won more gold medals in the competition achievements of Nguyen Thien Ngan (U20 women), Vu My Linh (U18 women), Mai Hieu Linh (U16 women), Tong Thai Hoang An (U14 women), Nguyen Dinh Tam Anh (U12 women), Nguyen Vu Bao Chau (U10 women), Nguyen Duc Huyen My (U8 women) and Le Minh Quang (U6), Pham Xuan An (U8), Nguyen Xuan Phuong (U10), Nguyen Trung Quan (U14), Dinh Nho Kiet (U16), Dau Khuong Duy (U18).
Regarding the overall results, the Vietnamese youth chess team ranked first, leading the total medal count in standard chess, rapid chess and blitz chess.
The leader of the Vietnamese youth chess team at the tournament, who is also Vice President and General Secretary of the Vietnam Chess Federation - Mr. Nguyen Minh Thang, speaking from Malaysia, said: “Each result of the young Vietnamese players is the effort from the professional ability of the athletes. Entering the competition, Vietnamese players are required to maintain the most stable spirit, reaching their true potential. We recognize that young players in the Southeast Asian region are gradually narrowing in terms of expertise, so Vietnamese chess will be very cautious in investing to have a core force for the future.”
Continue to look for potential professional players
Young players competing in international tournaments will gain additional expertise such as the 2025 Southeast Asian Age Group Championship.
At this tournament, although Vietnamese young chess players won overwhelmingly in many matches for men's and women's standard, rapid and blitz chess, the professional managers recognized that we still have to look for truly outstanding players in order to be potential faces to compete with famous seniors of Vietnamese chess.
In all three competitions, Mr. Nguyen Minh Thang analyzed that the U16, U18, and U20 age groups of Vietnamese youth chess have a number of faces that are expected to develop well in the future. In standard chess, we have Nguyen Ha Thi Hai (U16 men), Nguyen Quoc Hy (U20 men), Dang Anh Minh (U18 men), and Nguyen Binh Vy (U18 women) achieving important gold medals. In blitz chess, many famous faces such as Nguyen Thien Ngan, Dau Khuong Duy, and Dinh Nho Kiet won gold medals. In rapid chess, Nguyen Quoc Hy, Bui Ngoc Phuong Nghi, Vuong Tung Lam, and Dang Le Xuan Hien achieved championship results for themselves.
In fact, the Southeast Asian age group championship is always a place for young athletes from countries in the region to compete and gain experience. Vietnamese young chess players participate in a number of tournaments in the Asian youth system in 2025 and the world tournament system in 2025, but the outstanding professional factors have not been shown much.
“We actively create conditions for young athletes to compete in international tournaments to improve their skills. In recent times, through many international tournaments and intensive training, some players have developed well, such as Dau Khuong Duy or Dinh Nho Kiet. However, chess is an intellectual sport , and those who develop exceptionally well must go through tournaments to achieve success,” Mr. Nguyen Minh Thang added.
