1. This is an endemic snake species found only in Vietnam. The horned viper is found in the forests of Central Vietnam, especially in limestone mountains such as Quang Binh and Quang Tri, where the ecological conditions are isolated. Photo: iNaturalist. 2. Has a distinctive “horn” above the eye. Two branches of scales protrude like small horns, making this snake easily recognizable and stand out among other vipers. Photo: iNaturalist.
3. Possesses camouflaged scales. Brown, black, gray combined with special patterns help it hide in the forest floor, making it very difficult to detect. Photo: iNaturalist. 4. It is a highly venomous species. Although it does not actively attack humans, when threatened, the horned viper can bite and cause serious damage due to hemotoxin venom. Photo: iNaturalist.
5. Primarily nocturnal and arboreal. Being arboreal and reclusive, the horned viper usually hunts at night for prey such as frogs, lizards or young birds. Photo: iNaturalist. 6. Relatively small body size. Adult snakes are usually only about 50–70 cm long, with a slender body and a triangular head – a common feature of vipers. Photo: iNaturalist. 7. It is a symbol of biodiversity in the limestone mountains of Vietnam. The presence of this snake in an isolated environment reflects the ecological importance and conservation value of the limestone mountain ecosystem. Photo: iNaturalist.
8. Received international scientific attention since the late 20th century . The horned viper was scientifically described in 1990, and has since become the subject of research on the evolution, distribution and biological adaptation of vipers. Photo: iNaturalist.
