According to the announcement of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, from 0:00 on July 1, 2025 to December 31, 2025, Vinh International Airport will temporarily suspend all flight operations to serve 3 important infrastructure renovation and upgrade projects including: repairing runways and taxiways; renovating and expanding aircraft parking lots; renovating passenger terminal T1. This is a strategic decision to modernize the central airport of the North Central region, meeting long-term development needs.

In particular, the runway and taxiway repair project has a total investment of more than 623 billion VND, aiming to reinforce the road surface, drainage system, signal lights, aviation signals, etc. The aircraft parking expansion project is implemented on an area of nearly 30,000 m², increasing the capacity to accommodate 9 narrow-body aircraft, with a total investment of about 237 billion VND. Along with that, the T1 passenger terminal will be renovated, adding more usable space to increase the service capacity from 2.5 to 3-3.5 million passengers/year.
Vinh International Airport and related parties have also made careful preparations for the airport's temporary suspension of operations. Mr. Nguyen Anh Son - Deputy Director of Vinh International Airport said that the unit has developed a suitable operation plan for the 6 months the airport is not in operation. The entire board of directors and department leaders will stay at the airport during this time to coordinate with contractors, supervise the construction process, and ensure the progress and quality of the project.

Meanwhile, the majority of the Port’s staff will be temporarily transferred to work at other airports across the country such as Tho Xuan (Thanh Hoa), Noi Bai, Da Nang , Phu Quoc, etc. Of these, the largest number will be reinforced at Tho Xuan and Phu Quoc – two destinations with high exploitation demand. A small number of staff with personal wishes will also be given temporary leave.
“Even though the airport is closed, the force is still reorganized, there is no waste or interruption of human resources,” Mr. Son said.
Notably, the official closure date is July 1, but since early June, some items that do not affect flight operations have started construction early. In particular, the aircraft parking expansion project has started construction since early June to save time and shorten the overall progress.

According to the records, vehicles, machinery and human resources have been focused on construction in the past few days. This is a flexible and proactive approach to minimize the extension of the airport closure time. According to the representative of the Project Management Board, the apron is an area outside the runway, so it can be constructed independently, without affecting flight operations in June.
Not only the airport, airlines also have plans to respond during the temporary closure of Vinh airport. Airlines have issued notices instructing passengers to change flights, refund tickets free of charge, and recommend alternative travel options through neighboring airports such as Tho Xuan (Thanh Hoa), Dong Hoi (Quang Binh), Noi Bai ( Hanoi ). Airlines have also adjusted flight schedules, increasing the frequency of appropriate routes during the temporary closure of Vinh airport.
At the same time, many road and rail transport businesses have also begun to adapt. Many bus companies have planned to add trips and increase the frequency of routes from Nghe An to Hanoi, Thanh Hoa, and Dong Hoi to connect passengers from other airports. The North-South train can also become an alternative means of transport for passengers who are not in a hurry and want to save costs. Travel companies in Nghe An - Ha Tinh have also adjusted tour routes, flexibly changed schedules, and supported customers to change departure and end points of their trips .

The leaders of Vinh International Airport said that although the closure time will coincide with the rainy and stormy season, with high determination, the construction units will mobilize forces and equipment to ensure the project is completed on schedule, absolutely safe and meets the required technical quality. The goal is that by early 2026, Vinh Airport will return to operation with a spacious appearance, outstanding exploitation capacity, contributing to promoting socio-economic development in the North Central region.
