Recently, Coach Mai Duc Chung was honored to be awarded the title "Hero of Labor" for his outstanding achievements in creative labor, making important contributions to the cause of building socialism and defending the Fatherland.

This is a worthy reward for Coach Mai Duc Chung’s contributions to Vietnamese football over more than 4 decades. This is not only a recognition of the successes achieved but also a great source of motivation, motivating Coach Mai Duc Chung and Vietnamese women’s football players to continue to strive and make efforts to improve.

Mr. Mai Duc Chung is originally from Hung Yen, born in 1951 in Ngoc Ha flower village, Hanoi . He was a famous player during the subsidy period, playing for the Hanoi Xe Ca team, the Duong Sat team (1975-1984) and the Vietnam national team (1981-1984). He was one of the players who had the honor of playing in the first football match between the North and the South after the country's reunification. On November 7, 1976, the historic match featured many famous players such as Pham Huynh Tam Lang, Mai Duc Chung, Le Thuy Hai...

After retiring, Mr. Chung moved to the Railway youth team in 1984. Up to now, he has had 41 years of coaching, leading and training thousands of players of both men's and women's football.

In particular, he is the first coach to lead both the men's and women's national teams, the first coach to lead the Vietnamese women's team to the World Cup (2023), in addition to winning the Merdeka Cup 2008 with U22 Vietnam. Mr. Chung's greatest contribution and success in his coaching career was with the women's team, when he was the first head coach when the team was founded in 1995, then returned to lead many times.

Coach Mai Duc Chung is not only a talented coach but also a shining example of perseverance, dedication and devotion. The title of Hero of Labor that he received is a great honor, a recognition of his outstanding achievements in his coaching career and his contribution to the development of Vietnamese women's football. This is not only a personal honor but also a source of pride for Vietnamese sports .

“This title will be a great source of motivation for me to continue to make efforts to contribute to national football. Although my health is not as good as before, I always remind myself to take advantage of all available resources to continue to accompany the team, achieve more achievements, and be worthy of this title,” the captain of the Vietnamese women's football team affirmed.

In mid-2024, Coach Mai Duc Chung agreed to return to lead the Vietnamese women's team, surprising many people. Because at the end of 2023, after participating in the historic Women's World Cup in New Zealand with the Vietnamese women's team, the 76-year-old coach announced his retirement from the team and a complete break. Mr. Chung wanted to make up for it, spend time with his family, and take care of his health after decades of wandering, contributing a lot to the success of Vietnamese football, especially women's football.

In 2025, this 75-year-old coach will continue to lead the Vietnamese women's team to compete in three arenas, including: the 2026 Asian Cup qualifiers, the Southeast Asian Championship and the 33rd SEA Games.

“I think there is no one like me in the world when I decided to come back. When I returned, many people were surprised. A female player once confided in me: Uncle, if you quit the women's team, I would probably quit too. I said that to share that I returned to the Vietnam women's team because of my love for the players. I did not do it for money or status" - Coach Mai Duc Chung said, and confided: "Some people asked me why I haven't rested yet. Is it wise to stop at the top, because what if I am not successful at the end of my career? But I am not afraid of failure. I am ready to face it with responsibility and confidence. As long as the team needs me, I will still be there."
