The US dollar rose against major currencies on Wednesday as economic data reinforced market expectations of a Federal Reserve interest rate cut, while the pound fell on a sell-off in British government bonds.

Traders are also adjusting positions ahead of the US Labor Department's June jobs report, due on Thursday, ahead of the July 4th holiday.

The dollar had earlier lost some ground but quickly regained momentum after the ADP national employment report showed that the number of jobs in the US private sector fell for the first time in more than two years in June, raising expectations that the Fed could cut interest rates as early as September.

President Donald Trump's massive tax cut and spending bill narrowly passed the US Senate on Tuesday, adding $3.3 trillion to the national debt. Debate on the bill now moves back to the House.

President Donald Trump announced that Vietnam has reached a trade deal with the United States that will reduce planned tariffs and could prompt other countries to reach similar tax deals before the July 9 deadline when higher tariffs are set to take effect.

"I think the logic of the market is that if no country agrees to a deal, then the pressure will be on the US, and that's negative for the dollar because it will entail adjustments on all sides, including the fiscal bill, because the tariff element is not officially included but still plays a background role," said Steve Englander, head of global G10 FX research at Standard Chartered. "But if some countries accept the deal, then the rest will be in trouble. That's generally positive for risk because the market is confident that the (trade) agreements will be established," he added.

The dollar rose 0.15% to 143.635 against the Japanese yen, looking to end a two-session losing streak. The dollar also rose 0.06% to 0.79150 against the Swiss franc, marking a recovery after seven straight sessions of losses.

"The dollar is bouncing back against its G10 peers, and it's no coincidence that it's been accompanied by a nearly 20 basis point increase in U.S. interest rates," said Marc Chandler, chief market strategist at Bannockburn Global Forex LLC.

UK government bonds suffered their biggest sell-off since October 2022 after the government abruptly cut welfare cuts and speculation about the future of the finance minister. The pound fell 0.79% to $1.3634, hitting a one-week low and potentially ending a two-day winning streak.

The euro fell 0.08% to $1.179725, but gained 0.9% against the pound.
