Information Officer School builds self-study program for English communication

In order to improve the foreign language proficiency of all cadres, lecturers, employees and students, the Information Officer School has just developed and put into operation a self-study English communication program. With careful investment, easy to learn, and specific results evaluation, the program has initially brought positive results in self-studying English at the school.

At the end of the lecture hall, Sergeant Le Tung Lam - a student of Battalion 14, Information Officer School took the opportunity to practice English using an application on the website platform built by the school. On the screen, the dialogue "Plan for weekends" was playing. Mr. Lam repeated the dialogue according to the instructions of the virtual assistant, receiving instant feedback on pronunciation and intonation. "Learning quickly, easily remembered and conveniently are the benefits of learning English with this application. The school creates video clips to guide pronunciation, students watch and practice, so it is very accessible" - Mr. Lam shared.

With the curriculum built on the school's internal website, staff, lecturers and students can study anytime with their personal accounts, the learning process is saved, and there is a specific assessment of effectiveness... Learning English for everyone is no longer stressful but becomes closer, more lively and proactive.

Colonel, Dr. Tran Van Thuan - Director of the Center for Information Technology and Foreign Languages, Information Officer School - the unit assigned to build the application, said that, stemming from the need to improve foreign language skills for the entire school, the center established a learning materials production team consisting of 10 professional staff, coordinating with 60 students to support the recording. From January to March, the team completed 50 lectures in phase 1, creating more than 3,000 learner accounts. All videos and exercises comply with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ​​(CEFR); integrating voice recognition technology and AI for instant feedback...

The program is designed for all staff, lecturers, employees and students, divided into 2 phases. In which, phase 1 focuses on developing English communication skills, especially listening and speaking skills with 50 common communication topics. The content and number of topics are selected based on the target group and age; the program is designed into 5 levels for different ages and groups of learners. In phase 2, the program will develop English for work communication, focusing on equipping learners with the knowledge and skills to use English necessary at work with 20 topics. The program is designed for 5 groups of subjects, including: Board of Directors; faculty and teachers; agencies; units; students. Through this application, learners are provided with vocabulary, basic sentence structures and gradually improve their communication skills in practical contexts. The course focuses on improving listening and speaking skills, enabling learners to participate in everyday conversations and discuss familiar topics. Learners are placed in courses appropriate to their abilities, from basic to intermediate levels, with the ability to interact flexibly in a variety of contexts, including everyday life, work and society.

After one month of implementing the self-study English communication program, the school surveyed 108 learners, showing a very high level of overall satisfaction, with 95% of learners positively evaluating the program. The learning interface was assessed as friendly; lesson content was appropriate. Regarding the quality of the program, the average score of learners for the program was 7.8/10; learning videos received a very good rating from 97% of learners...

Through initial assessment, Colonel, Associate Professor, Doctor Le Xuan Hung - Principal of the Information Officer School said that the application of self-study English communication has created a flexible foreign language training environment, saving budget, promoting the self-study role of cadres, lecturers and students. After the initial period of mass implementation, the rate of cadres and lecturers meeting foreign language proficiency standards increased by 12%; 100% of first-year students completed at least 10 level 1 topics. These results directly contributed to improving the quality of training, meeting the roadmap for building a "Smart School".

In the coming time, the school will continue to complete phase 1 of the application, including adding offline learning functions, an expanded reading material library; updating the assessment question bank. In the 2026 - 2030 period, phase 2 will be implemented, developing 20 work English topics, close to professional situations such as writing emails, reports, presentations, negotiations. Along with that, the school will build a community version (mobile app) to serve military units in the South Central region and local people, contributing to spreading the foreign language learning movement; integrating the application into the training management system, connecting result data to serve as a criterion for evaluating the "Lifelong Learning" emulation movement; gradually applying artificial intelligence to create personalized exercises.
