Rising from adversity
The small house at the end of Quang Xa village, nestled between banana trees and old fences. There, three generations, an old lady near death, a woman living in depression after the shock of losing her husband and a 12th grade student, quietly rely on each other through every meal and every long night.
Nguyen Van Thuong was born in a difficult situation: his father died before he was born, his mother fell into a state of prolonged depression due to grief. He and his mother depended on their elderly grandmother for support. Thuong's childhood was a series of days associated with deprivation and constant worries.
In the house without a male pillar, the most precious thing is not material assets, but the light from the study lamp every night, where Thuong silently nurtures her dreams and determination. Unlike many of her peers whose parents invest in their studies, Thuong does not have the conditions to enter any "training furnace". Without extra classes, modern computers or private study rooms, Thuong takes advantage of every means possible: an old phone to look up documents, the school library to borrow advanced books, digital platforms to practice exam questions... The knowledge she acquires comes from her own efforts and each lesson is a journey of self- discovery that is arduous but no less meaningful.
Although she had no one to guide her and no ideal learning environment, Thuong's determination and discipline in studying made many friends and teachers admire her. She made a specific study plan for each day and each week, reviewed her knowledge through previous year's exams, then learned from her experiences and corrected her mistakes.
At night, when the whole neighborhood has turned off the lights to go to sleep, the small room where Thuong lives is still lit. Under that light, the skinny student still sits quietly at his desk, pondering over each Physics formula, solving each difficult math problem, reading each page of specialized documents. For Thuong, each exam, each test is not only a learning task, but also a measure of progress.
The early maturity of a high school student has moved and impressed many people. Overcoming adversity, Nguyen Van Thuong has forged his will and then from adversity, he has lit up his faith with determination and aspiration to conquer the peak of knowledge. He does not only study for exams, but also to escape poverty, to take care of his mother, to repay his grandmother and to continue writing a brighter life.
With his efforts, determination and admirable self-study spirit, Nguyen Van Thuong has achieved many outstanding academic achievements, winning many awards in excellent student competitions at all levels, such as: In the 2023-2024 school year, he won third prize in the provincial excellent student competition in Physics and third prize in the excellent student competition for advanced levels; in the 2024-2025 school year, he won second prize in the provincial excellent student competition, second prize in the excellent student competition for advanced levels and third prize in the national excellent student competition. |
The result of will and determination
Thanks to his serious study method and admirable spirit of overcoming difficulties, Nguyen Van Thuong has continuously achieved many impressive results in provincial and national excellent student competitions, becoming one of the outstanding students of the Physics major, Vo Nguyen Giap High School for the Gifted. Notably, in the national excellent student selection exam for the 2024-2025 school year, he excellently won third prize in Physics, an achievement that not every student with adequate conditions can easily achieve.
Those awards are proof of my learning ability, the sweet results of months of hard work studying in poor conditions, of long quiet nights by the late night lights.
Mr. Truong Dinh Hung, the homeroom teacher who directly trained the school's Physics team, could not hide his pride when mentioning this special student: "Thuong is a student with very good qualities and thinking. What is special about her is her excellent self-study ability, quick grasp of knowledge and always persistently pursuing her goals. She is not only the pride of the Physics major but also a strong role model for other students, especially those in difficult circumstances."
Not only does Thuong have solid knowledge, she is also a student with outstanding scientific thinking and creativity. She often researches practical issues, connecting Physics knowledge with technology to apply in life.
That is why, although majoring in Physics, Thuong dreams of becoming an expert in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), a promising and challenging field. “I want to study AI in depth, especially integrated applications in life,education and healthcare. I dream of being able to create technological tools to help the community, especially the disadvantaged,” Thuong confided.
The story of Nguyen Van Thuong is not only a typical example of overcoming difficulties but also a vivid proof of the power of self-study. The journey from an orphan boy, living in a poor family, rising up by his own strength to become one of the outstanding students of Vo Nguyen Giap High School for the Gifted has proven that if you have the will, determination and the right learning method, then circumstances cannot prevent you from reaching knowledge.
And we believe that the journey to knowledge of this determined student will continue with more brilliant achievements. Because what he has is not conditions, nor luck, but faith, determination and a sincere desire: to study, to work, to contribute.
