Developing Vietnamese traditional medicine in the new period

Today, July 4, the Government Office held a national online conference to review 5 years of implementing the Traditional Medicine Development Program, combining traditional medicine with modern medicine, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long. After 5 years of implementing Decision No. 1893/QD-TTg, dated December 25, 2019 of the Prime Minister, up to now, the system of basic traditional medicine facilities has been invested in upgrading, the traditional medicine network at the grassroots health level has been increasingly consolidated and developed with 5 central-level traditional medicine hospitals and 61 provincial-level traditional medicine hospitals, reaching 92%.

The quality of medicinal herbs and medicinal ingredients is guaranteed, traditional medicines are diverse and highly effective, currently maintaining a network of gene conservation in 7 ecological regions, 17 enterprises have invested in cultivating 106 medicinal herbs and have been granted certificates of medicinal herbs meeting GACP-WHO standards with an area of ​​21,800 hectares. In addition, medical examination and treatment services in the field of traditional medicine are increasingly rich and diversified, and quality is improved.

However, in the implementation process, there are still many shortcomings and limitations; some localities and units have not paid attention to the development of traditional medicine, leading to slow implementation of Decision No. 1893.

Speaking at the conference, Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long affirmed the position and long history of Vietnam's traditional medicine; at the same time, he requested the Ministry of Health and other ministries and branches to continue organizing propaganda to innovate thinking, raise awareness and responsibility for the development of Vietnam's traditional medicine.

The Ministry of Health needs to preside over and coordinate with relevant ministries and agencies to research, propose the development and promulgation of laws on traditional medicine and pharmacy, strengthen research and application of advanced and modern technology for medicinal plants and traditional remedies; promote training of human resources in traditional medicine and pharmacy...
