Thien Mu Pagoda from above

More opportunities to explore uniqueness

In the serene space of a Hue pagoda, the sound of bells ringing and the smoke of incense spreading, visitors are guided by monks in meditation. After learning how to calm their minds, visitors are invited to enjoy tea, helping their souls to calm down. At that moment, all the worries and fatigue of visitors become light. One visitor said briefly: "The journey full of mindfulness in the heart of the ancient capital is wonderful."

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc An, Director of Connect Travel Co., Ltd., shared that the “tea meditation” tour brings tourists new feelings during their journey to Hue. At Duc Son Pagoda in Thuy Xuan Ward, visitors can enjoy tea, practice meditation, listen to monks share and visit and talk with orphans. From these trips, many tourists shared that they felt spiritual and cultural values and felt deeply healed.

Spiritual cultural tourism is considered one of the most attractive tourism products for domestic and foreign tourists. Hue has many diverse religious establishments and spiritual relics, including pagodas, churches, communal houses, temples, shrines... This diversity creates a favorable environment for the development of spiritual cultural tourism.

Just to mention the Quan The Am festival, which is held annually at the Quan The Am Buddhist Spiritual Tourism Center, Tu Tuong Mountain, Thuy Xuan Ward. The festival not only attracts a large number of pilgrims and worshipers but also a large number of domestic and foreign tourists, especially those interested in Buddhist culture and ethnic culture. Or, the Hue Nam temple festival every year always attracts a large number of followers of the Mother Goddess worship with tens of thousands of people from all over coming to Hue to attend.

According to the representative of Hue City Tourism Association, Hue has more than 300 large and small pagodas and Buddhist temples, including about 100 ancient temples. The ancient architecture of the pagodas is almost intact, containing the spiritual, cultural and historical values of the ancient capital. This wonderful thing has urged pilgrims, visitors and worshippers from many other localities in the country to come to Hue. Looking at Thien Mu Pagoda, we can see that not only on the 15th and 1st of the lunar month, but it seems that every day of the month there are many visitors from all over the world coming here.

Another highlight is vegetarian cuisine in Hue. This is one of the unique culinary lines, rich in nutritional value and also brings spiritual values. Many tourists coming to Hue do not forget to visit vegetarian restaurants to experience. For them, it is not only a way to enjoy Hue cuisine but also an opportunity to feel the spiritual culture of the land of Huong Ngu.

Promote spiritual cultural tourism

Despite many favorable conditions, for a long time, spiritual cultural tourism products in Hue have not been numerous. Besides the concern about how to develop spiritual cultural tourism without negatively affecting the culture, environment, and sacredness of spiritual sites, the coordination between travel agencies and businesses, and investment in research and product development still have limitations.

With the desire to promote tourism, in 2024, representatives of the City People's Committee and departments, branches and sectors had a working session with the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha of the city on building and developing spiritual cultural tourism associated with Buddhist establishments in the area. At that meeting, Member of the Standing Committee of the City Party Committee, Permanent Vice Chairman of the Hue City People's Committee Nguyen Thanh Binh said that in order to promote spiritual tourism to develop commensurate with its inherent potential, there needs to be a consistent coordination mechanism between departments, branches, localities, units with spiritual establishments and travel agencies. Thereby, it is necessary to propose and develop appropriate mechanisms and policies to widely and professionally promote this type of tourism to domestic and foreign tourists.

A more determined direction is that recently, the People's Committee of Hue City has also issued a plan on "Developing tourism to learn about and experience Buddhist culture in Hue City" for the period 2025 - 2030. In addition to setting out specific goals including: Synthesizing, evaluating the potential and current status of exploiting spiritual tourism products in Hue City; surveying products, evaluating tourism services associated with Buddhist establishments to propose solutions to meet the needs and tastes of tourists, creating conditions for tourism businesses to exploit this product in the area. The plan also builds and orients a number of tourism programs to learn about and experience Buddhist culture in the area to put into use, develop harmoniously in a sustainable direction. At the same time, encourage a number of businesses and individuals to invest in various types of tourism services in this product.

Ms. Tran Thi Hoai Tram, Director of the Department of Tourism, said that the city's tourism development strategy will focus on building and perfecting tourism products that Hue has strengths in, suitable for the market, to exploit the local tourism potential and resources. In particular, the tourism industry will work with travel agencies to build appropriate and systematic spiritual and cultural tourism products to exploit the depth of spiritual culture and beliefs and bring experiences to visitors.
