Collisions between aircraft are rare, as the aviation industry sets very strict safety standards, with modern ground surveillance technology.
However, these types of incidents still occur from time to time in some parts of the world .
In February, at Seattle-Tacoma Airport in the US, the wing of a Japan Airlines plane collided with the tail of a Delta Airlines plane.

The incident caused the wing of the Japan Airlines plane to get stuck in the tail of the Delta plane.
Jason Chan, a witness to the incident, said he felt a slight shaking at the moment of the collision. However, it was only when the captain announced over the loudspeaker that the passengers learned about the incident.
In 2024, a video went viral on social media showing the wingtip of a Virgin Atlantic plane stuck to the wing of a British Airways plane after a collision at Heathrow Airport, UK.
The collision occurred while the Virgin Boeing 787-9 had just landed and was being towed to another location at the airport. At the time of the incident, there were no passengers on board either plane.
In 2016, two China Eastern Airlines planes collided at Hongqiao International Airport (Shanghai, China).
Accordingly, when the airline's flight number MU2153 had just landed after a flight from Shaanxi to Shanghai, the right wing collided with the left wing of another plane.
Shared images show that the collision caused the two wings to be damaged and stuck together.
Most wing collisions cause only minor damage, but there have been collisions that have caused severe damage.
Specifically, in 2016, at the airport in the Indonesian capital Jakarta, a Batik Air passenger plane was preparing to take off when its wing hit the tail of a TransNusa plane being towed across the runway.

The collision caused no casualties. However, one wing of the Batik Air plane caught fire. All passengers were evacuated to safety.
Repairing an aircraft wing is not cheap. According to the website of aviation insurance company Global Aerospace, the cost of repairing the wing tip on the latest carbon fiber aircraft can be up to 1.5 million USD (39 billion VND).
Additionally, when an aircraft is damaged in a collision, the airline will have to withdraw it from the fleet for repairs. This affects passenger transport.
Aviation collisions and hazards
Wing strikes usually only cause damage to the wing. However, many aviation collisions can have catastrophic consequences.
In 1996, a Saudi Arabian airliner had just taken off from New Delhi airport (India) when it collided violently in the sky with a Kazakhstan Airlines plane preparing to land.
The incident killed more than 350 people, including passengers and crew.

Most of the victims on the Saudi Arabian Airlines plane were Muslims. They were on their way to Mecca - the holiest place for Muslims - to pray.
Bird strikes are a common problem in aviation. In 2018, an Air China Boeing 737-800 departing from Tianjin, China, collided with a bird.
When the plane landed in Hong Kong (China), the front of the plane had a large hole.
According to the US Federal Aviation Administration, the damage caused by bird strikes on aircraft from 1990 to 2019 is estimated at up to 500 million USD/year.
Bird strikes that damage an aircraft’s engines, wings, nose, or windshield do not pose a threat to passengers. Most planes are able to land after a collision. However, they are grounded for weeks for repairs.
For example, a cracked cockpit window can cost an airline $90,000 to repair, or a wing damaged by a bird strike can cost $500,000 to restore to normal.

In Vietnam, recently on the afternoon of June 27 at Noi Bai airport, two planes collided. The incident caused a Vietnam Airlines plane's tail wing to tear.
According to witnesses at the scene, the incident occurred when the A321 was waiting on the taxiway to prepare for takeoff. Meanwhile, the Boeing 787 taxied behind the A321.
