Fishing port - the breath of the marine economy
Phuoc Hoi Ward was merged from Phuoc Hoi Ward, Phuoc Loc Ward and Tan Phuoc Commune (old) according to the Resolution of the National Assembly Standing Committee on the arrangement of administrative units. The administrative - political center is located in Phuoc Hoi Ward. After the merger, the locality has an area of 38.09 km² and a population of 49,480 people, becoming one of the most populous wards, with a large area and a key role in the coastal area of the Southeast of Lam Dong province. Phuoc Hoi Ward has nearly 50,000 people, of which about 60% live on fishing, logistics services and seafood processing. The seafaring profession has become an inseparable part of the life and culture of the people here. There are families with three generations working in the sea, from grandparents to grandchildren, attached to each wave, each season of floating fish.
“There are smooth trips, and there are also times when the sea is rough and we return empty-handed. But fishermen do not abandon the sea. The sea is their home, their livelihood, their responsibility,” old fisherman Mai Van Men shared while preparing the boat with his son for the upcoming trip.
The focal point of the fishing industry in Phuoc Hoi is the fishing port - considered the "heart" of this coastal ward. Every day, from dawn to dusk, the port is always filled with the sound of engines, the sound of trays of fish being dumped onto the scales, the calls of vendors and the smiles of fishermen after each successful fishing trip.
Here, the fishing logistics service chain is increasingly developing. From fuel supply, fishing gear to boat repair services, seafood processing, frozen storage... Thanks to that, many local workers have stable jobs. Preliminary processing facilities, cold storage, and boat mechanics have sprung up around the port, forming a fairly complete marine economic ecosystem. "If this fishing port lives, the whole ward lives. If there are goods, there will be work. Thanks to the sea, we can take care of our families and our children's education," said Ms. Nguyen Thi Hang, a fish loading and unloading specialist.
Sustainable marine economic development
Chairman of Phuoc Hoi Ward People's Committee - Mr. Huynh Thanh Quoc Viet said that in the development orientation of the locality, the marine economy will continue to be the strategic spearhead. Based on the existing infrastructure, the ward is implementing a plan to upgrade and expand the fishing port, build a wholesale seafood market, create conditions for fishermen to access capital, insurance, and support to upgrade fishing vessels in a modern direction.
“We clearly identify: Marine economy is the main, long-term development direction. Fishing ports will be the center connecting industries, the locomotive pulling the whole community up,” Mr. Quoc Viet emphasized.
At the same time, the government also coordinates with specialized units to provide technical training, guide fishermen to change their jobs, and apply digital technology in catching, preserving, and consuming seafood. Marine environmental protection, waste classification at ports, and wastewater treatment are also included in the sustainable development plan. Not only a place to make a living, for Phuoc Hoi people, the sea is also a part of their identity, culture, and pride. Cau Ngu Festival, Nghinh Ong Festival... are still held every year, like a bond between people and the sea. Many generations grew up by the sea, understanding that going to sea is not only for fish but also to maintain fishing grounds, to maintain the country's sovereignty from every inch of wave far from shore. Each ship crossing the estuary not only carries nets and fuel, but also carries the aspirations and determination of people who have never backed down in the face of storms.
Phuoc Hoi today, from a small coastal fishing village, has risen to become a pillar coastal ward of the new Lam Dong province. Although there are many challenges, with the courage of seafarers, with the determination of the government and the community, this place is maintaining a wind called "vitality from the sea".
