Instead of carrying “thick” books every time they go out, many young people in Ha Tinh today only need a smartphone to “carry the whole library” with them. No longer limited to the traditional way of reading, audiobooks and e-books are becoming a new trend, helping young people access knowledge flexibly, saving time while still maintaining the habit of reading.

Amidst the pace of modern life, this new form of reading not only reflects changes in information reception habits but also shows the initiative of young people in enriching their knowledge in their own way.

Mr. Truong Huy Nam is a person who loves reading books.

Mr. Truong Huy Nam (born in 1991, resident of Tran Phu ward) is a person who loves reading books. Paper books have always been his “companion” every night for many years. However, after starting a job and becoming an office worker, his busy work schedule makes it difficult for Mr. Nam to spend hours reading paper books.

“When work got too busy, I started to feel regretful because I no longer had enough time to read books like before. Then, a friend introduced me to try listening to audiobooks. From driving to walking, exercising, even while cooking, I took the opportunity to turn on the book to listen. There were months when I listened to three or four books, something that was very difficult to do before,” Nam shared.

Audiobooks are offering a very different experience.

Not only is it an alternative to traditional reading time, for Mr. Nam, audiobooks bring a very different experience. The emotional voice, the narrating music , and the coherent presentation make the content more vivid and easier to absorb. He especially loves memoirs, life skills books, or literary novels expressed through a warm voice.

Mr. Nam said: “Listening to books is not a sign of being lazy to read, but to expand opportunities to access knowledge. There are days when I am tired, I turn on a chapter of a light book and feel soothed and re-energized.”

Along with audiobooks, e-books are also occupying an important position in the reading habits of young people. Ms. Dao Huyen Trang (born in 1997), a bank employee in Thanh Sen ward, has used e-books since she was a student.

Ms. Dao Huyen Trang has maintained the habit of reading books and online documents since her university days.

Ms. Trang confided: “When I was in college, I often looked for study materials through e-books, which were both cost-effective and easy to carry. After starting work, I still maintained the habit of reading books using my phone or a dedicated reader. Every night before going to bed, I usually read a few pages of a book, and sometimes when my eyes are tired, I switch to listening to a book.”

Being careful in choosing reading content, Ms. Trang clearly divides between paper books, e-books and audiobooks. For books that require deep understanding or books that preserve memories, she still chooses paper books. However, for foreign books or books about finance, management... with content serving work and study, e-books are still a more suitable choice for her. According to Ms. Trang, e-books or audiobooks cannot replace paper books. On the contrary, each type has its own value. The important thing is whether or not you can maintain reading and how to read effectively.

In Ha Tinh, it is not difficult to see young people wearing headphones while exercising, sitting in a coffee shop attentively with their phones open to read books. Platforms such as Voiz FM, Fonos, Woka, Audible, Sachnoi.app... are increasingly used by young people not only for entertainment but also for learning, training thinking and self-development.

As for Nguyen Quynh Anh, gifted books, commemorative books or classic literary works are always kept as souvenirs.

It is worth noting that most young people who use digital books do not abandon paper books. On the contrary, they consider them to be two forms that go together. Young person Nguyen Quynh Anh (born 2003, Viet Xuyen commune) said: “For me, paper books are always a priority. I always want to keep printed copies of books as gifts, souvenir books or classic literary works. But in daily life, to maintain the habit of reading, I need flexibility. Maybe today I listen to a book while riding the bus, tomorrow I read a chapter of an ebook during my lunch break, and then on the weekend I spend time flipping through a paper book. That feeling makes reading a natural part of life.”

The development of audiobooks and e-books is not simply a manifestation of a technological trend but also reflects the spirit of active learning and flexible adaptability of Ha Tinh youth in the digital age. Whether accessing knowledge through traditional paper or through sound and screen, the most valuable thing is that reading has never been forgotten. In the constant movements of modern society, the reading habits of young people have not disappeared but are being renewed every day with a gentle, flexible approach but still profound enough to nourish knowledge and soul.
