When Xam, Tuong, Cheo... catch up with Gen Z

VHO - In the midst of the fast pace of modern life, when artistic tastes increasingly lean towards "easy to watch, convenient to listen to", traditional art forms such as Xam, Cheo, Tuong... are at risk of being forgotten.

Heritage, if it exists only in museums or on stages without audiences, is no different from “pure gold kept in a chest”. But the flow of culture never sleeps.

Through innovation, technology, visual experiences and modern storytelling, many initiatives are helping traditional art step out of the auditorium, come alive in everyday life and gradually regain its rightful place in the hearts of the contemporary public.

The program "Xam on the bus" attracts many tourists and locals to experience.

Get on the “bus”, go to “school”…

Faced with this situation, the Xam on the bus project was born, a creative effort to bring Xam art closer to the public, especially the younger generation. No longer confined to the traditional stage, Xam artists sing in the middle of the streets, amidst the sound of car horns and bustling crowds.

The unique feature of the program lies in the mobile performance space, on a double-decker bus, like a “traveling stage” through the iconic landmarks of Hanoi such as Hoan Kiem Lake, West Lake, Opera House, Cathedral…

The most joyful ancient Northern Xam melodies in Ha Thanh, Chan Que, Tu Hai Giao Tinh... resounding in the middle of the city have brought a new experience of enjoying art, at the same time creating close interaction between artists and audiences when they not only listen to Xam singing but also interact with the artists, learn the story and history of each Xam song and each melody.

Along with Xam, Cheo is also on its way to finding audiences through the project Thi Mau Xuyen Khong . With the form of art experience for children aged 7-15, the project helps children understand more about traditional art through many interesting activities: Watching excerpts of Quan Am Thi Kinh retold in a modern and concise style; learning about music in Cheo through the activity "Tich Tich Tinh Tang"; discovering the creation of ancient Cheo characters through the game "Heritage Code"... The combination of storytelling, performance and interaction helps children approach the art of Cheo in a close and fun way.

It can be seen that choosing a work in the Literature program and then adapting it into a play so that students can approach these works in their own way, especially through traditional art, will help them understand the work deeply and learn more about the art of Cheo.

Xam on the bus , Thi Mau crosses the space and many other creative projects are contributing to bringing traditional art out of its comfort zone, stepping straight into modern life to directly dialogue with today's public. Melodies that were once considered "old" are now renewed, resounding in the middle of bustling streets, among the lights and bustling people.

The artist no longer stands on a separate stage, but appears in everyday life, to touch the hearts of the young generation. And the young generation also realizes that cultural values that seem old and outdated are actually still alive… if told in a new way, closer to today’s pace of life.

Keep traditional art alive

In recent years, a positive signal can be seen: genres such as Xam, Tuong, Cheo... are gradually returning in entertainment or interactive art programs. Through modern stages, TV game shows, short videos on social networks... old melodies have been renewed, closer to the visual senses and reception habits of the public.

However, according to Dinh Thao, Deputy Director in charge of professional matters at the Center for Promotion and Promotion of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Vietnam (VICH), if traditional art only stops at the level of "attracting attention", it will not be able to make a sustainable step into contemporary life. A fleeting interest cannot create a long-term attachment.

If we want traditional art to truly live in today's life, we must first create conditions for it to be present regularly and naturally in many different spaces, from education, media, theater to community events. Not only for entertainment, traditional art needs to enter schools as a tool for aesthetic education; appear in the media as cultural content, not just as "supporting colors".

At the same time, it is necessary to promote so that the public can clearly distinguish which traditional elements are preserved and which are contemporary creative elements, thereby forming the habit of choosing and the need to approach proactively.

“To be able to do this, it requires coordination or participation from all levels and sectors, from the role of cultural management units, professional units, to researchers, collectors, artisans, artists, community cultural organizations, schools, newspapers and radio stations...”, Ms. Dinh Thao emphasized.

More importantly, traditional arts cannot “live sustainably” if they cannot support themselves. Theaters, art troupes, and performance stages can only truly survive when they have audiences, markets, and income to reinvest.

Developing traditional arts as part of the cultural industry is a modern approach that fits the context of today's creative economy. When an art form can create economic value, it will have a place, an incentive to innovate and a reason to continue to exist.
