Coal mine fire in China, 16 people died

Xinhua News Agency quoted a notice from the Panzhou government (China) saying that the fire broke out at around 8:10 a.m. on September 24 (local time) at the Shanjiashu coal mine in Panguan town.

Initial investigations show that 16 people were trapped after a conveyor belt caught fire. Officials said the fire has been extinguished and temperatures have returned to normal at the site.

Last month, Chinese officials said at least 11 people were killed in a coal mine explosion on the outskirts of the historic city of Yan’an in Shaanxi Province. The explosion occurred at 8:26 p.m. on August 21 at a coal mine near Yan’an, according to China Central Television (CCTV).

In February, a coal mine collapse in China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region buried dozens of people and vehicles under the rubble. At that time, ChinesePresident Xi Jinping ordered a search and rescue mission at the mine.

By June, Chinese officials said 53 people had died in the coal mine collapse, according to AFP.

Last year, 245 people died in 168 coal mine accidents in China, according to AFP, citing official figures. In 2021, 20 miners were rescued from a flooded coal mine in China's Shanxi province, but two others died in the incident.
