Joy from '5,000 VND house'
Each "5,000 VND House" is not only a physical construction, but also a sharing and mutual love spirit of students and tutors of Dong Thap University. Mr. Nguyen Tri Tuc, Deputy Secretary in charge of the Youth Union of Dong Thap University, said that each month, students contribute 5,000 VND, a small amount but can help a student in difficult circumstances with housing, even changing their lives, helping their families to escape poverty sustainably.

Dong Thap University handed over the '5,000 VND House' to Tran Tan Dat. |
During this year's summer volunteer campaign, Dong Thap University handed over the "5,000 VND House" to the family of Tran Tan Dat, a student of the Faculty of PhysicalEducation - Art Pedagogy in Nguyen Cu hamlet, Nhi My commune, Dong Thap province. The newly built house has helped Dat and his mother no longer have to worry every time there is a storm. Dat's joy is not only having a safe house, but also his deep gratitude to the teachers of the school who guided and encouraged him not to drop out of school, to continue his dream of going to university instead of working as a shipper.
Another case is Ngo Thanh Hieu, a student majoring in physical education, who also received a “5,000 VND House” in Dong Binh Hamlet, Cao Lanh Ward. Hieu's family no longer has to worry about food and accommodation when they have no land to cultivate and have an unstable income. Having a house is the foundation to help his family escape poverty. In addition, in this year's summer volunteer campaign, the School Youth Union also built more houses to help students in difficult circumstances have a warm home so they can study with peace of mind.
Each "5,000 VND House" built contains emotional stories about the will to rise up and aspire for life. Nguyen Phuc Thien, a final year student majoring in Vietnamese Studies, and his aunt, Nguyen Thi Thanh Nga, used to live in an old, termite-infested wooden house that was always on the verge of collapsing during heavy rains and strong winds. His mother left him when he was young, his grandmother and father passed away one after another, and Thien grew up in the arms of his aunt. With a meager income from repairing clothes, Mrs. Nga did not dare to dream of building a new house. But now, the 60m2 house, tiled with ceramic tiles and built with solid walls, has appeared, bringing overwhelming happiness to the two aunts and granddaughters.

Spread the spirit of charity
Each story is a vivid proof that the “5,000 VND House” not only provides a roof, but also spiritual support and motivation for students and their families to firmly step on the path to escape poverty.
The “5,000 VND House” model of Dong Thap University Youth Union has been established and developed for 16 years, from the early days with the name “House of Charity”, then “3,000 VND House”, and now “5,000 VND House”. Mr. Nguyen Tri Tuc shared more about the fund's operating mechanism, each staff and lecturer in the Youth Union age group contributing 10,000 VND/month and each student contributing 5,000 VND/month. This source of funding is collected periodically every month, along with the mobilization and connection of philanthropists and businesses. To ensure fairness and the right goal, the Youth Union has built a strict process of considering and giving housing to students from poor households.
According to Mr. Tuc, not only providing financial support, the Youth Union also gathers members and young people to participate in contributing voluntary labor days during peak activities. "The joint efforts and contributions from small tasks such as carrying bricks and mixing mortar have demonstrated the spirit of volunteering for the community of Dong Thap University youth," said Mr. Tuc.
Over time, the level of support for house construction has also been adjusted to suit the reality. From the initial 20 million VND, the support level has gradually increased to 30 million, 50 million and from the beginning of 2024 to now, it is 70 million VND/house. This change demonstrates the efforts of the University Youth Union to bring more spacious and quality homes to students. To date, the Dong Thap University Youth Union has handed over more than 90 houses to students in difficult circumstances in many localities in the Mekong Delta who are studying at the school.
Mr. Cao Dao Thep, Vice Principal of Dong Thap University, said that each “5,000 VND House” is not only a material asset, but also a great source of motivation. The new house not only helps families stabilize their lives, but also motivates students to strive to study better. Moreover, the “5,000 VND House” model has truly supported poor students to have a solid home, to study and practice with peace of mind. From there, it has made an important contribution to poverty reduction, ensuring social security in localities, and more importantly, educating the spirit of mutual love for the younger generation.
