A month ago, NPN ( Hai Phong ) was constantly tormented by pain due to gastric reflux. Ms. Le Thi Hien Ngoc, N's mother, said that before the 10th grade exam, her child constantly felt nauseous and occasionally had stomach pain. At the hospital, the doctor concluded that her child had gastric reflux due to psychological reasons. Feeling sorry for her child, Ms. Ngoc just wanted the exam to end quickly.
Ms. Ngoc also made a mistake that still haunts her. Her child had just finished the Math exam, so Ms. Ngoc downloaded the suggested answers from the internet for her child to see. The result was not as expected, N lost his spirit and his illness worsened, causing him to lose sleep all night.
Therefore, the next day, the child did not do well in the specialized subject exam. "It was not until he was admitted to Thai Phien High School that his condition improved. Now he is almost back to normal ," Ngoc confided.
She said that studying for the 10th grade entrance exam with her child was an experience she will never forget and never want to repeat. The whole family has been worried, confused and stressed for the past few months. For her, as long as her child has the opportunity to study in 10th grade at a public high school, she is satisfied because this is a more difficult and stressful mental battle than entering university.
Ms. Pham Thu Ha, Principal of Ngo Si Lien Secondary School, Hoan Kiem Ward ( Hanoi ) shared that every time the 10th grade entrance exam results are announced, her mood is "split in two". Half is happy for her children who have achieved their goals, half is sad for those who are less fortunate. "Yesterday, a parent still called to ask me to encourage their child. That child is still crying because he is 0.25 points short of getting into Viet Duc High School", Ms. Ha said.
Ms. Nguyen Thanh Hang, Ms. Ngoc's friend, is in a "unique" situation when her child takes the 10th grade exam for two consecutive years, the older child in 2024, the younger child this year. Two years, two feelings of anxiety, hope, and anticipation.
According to Ms. Hang, most people want their children to have the opportunity to study at public high schools and non-public schools with quality tuition fees beyond their means. Children lose sleep worrying about studying, mothers lose sleep worrying about their children's future.
Hanoi has just announced the exam scores and admission scores for grade 10 public high schools for the 2025-2026 school year. It is noted that the pressure is heavy on the shoulders of some parents. "It is true that 24.5 points still failed grade 10", that is the confession of a mother when her child was 0.5 points short of Yen Hoa High School. With this score, the child could have been admitted to many schools, but the child chose Yen Hoa High School as his first choice as a fate.
Ms. Tran Thanh Huong, Hai Ba Trung Ward (Hanoi) said that her daughter's exam result was 23.25 points, 0.5 points short of her first choice (Tran Phu High School, Hoan Kiem) and 0.25 points short of her second choice (Tran Nhan Tong High School, Hai Ba Trung).
These past few days, the couple has been energized, worried about their child but still have to encourage him. The consolation is that he passed his third choice exam, although he has to study far from home, he is still luckier than some of his classmates.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hung, Thuong Phuc commune (Hanoi) informed that his son did not pass the 3 wishes, the family is considering two options: vocational training or continuing education center. The son does not like both of these options, he wants to retake the exam next year. However, Mr. Hung analyzed that taking the exam is very difficult, one year of self-study, if the family does not manage well, the child can easily fall into vices. Therefore, the family persuades the child to choose one of the two options given.
Ms. Pham Thu Ha, Principal of Ngo Si Lien Secondary School, Hoan Kiem Ward (Hanoi) shared that every time the 10th grade entrance exam results are announced, her mood is "split in two". Half happy for her children who have achieved their goals, half sad for those who are less fortunate. "Yesterday, a parent still called to ask me to encourage their child. That child is still crying because he is 0.25 points short of getting into Viet Duc High School", Ms. Ha said.
As can be seen, the tightening of enrollment quotas for public grade 10 in Hanoi has put pressure on some inner-city areas. In suburban areas, students have great opportunities to study. However, due to the current way of registering and considering wishes, candidates and parents are always passive. Each student can register up to 3 wishes, but parents and candidates cannot predict how many candidates will register for the school, nor can they adjust their wishes after registering for the exam.
Over 96% of the school's junior high school graduates take the 10th grade exam, so even though she knew in advance, Ms. Ha couldn't help but feel sad when witnessing the students' passing and failing. Sometimes it was a feeling of regret. In class, the children studied well, but because of a little hesitation in the exam, some students failed their two favorite wishes and had to study the "anti-fail" wish. The children were sad, the parents were stressed, and the teachers were not completely happy.
Schools can't recruit everyone, schools can't find anyone.
According to the announcement of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, this year the city has enough places in public high schools for 10th graders for about 64% of junior high school graduates. The number of candidates taking the entrance exam this year is lower than last year, so the pressure is reduced.
However, at top schools, the competition rate is low but the chance of admission is still difficult. Because at these schools, the ability of students registering for the exam is not different and they often have good academic performance.
It is noted that the benchmark scores of many schools in the inner city area have decreased compared to the previous year. For example, in area 3, including districts (before switching to 2-level government): Dong Da, Thanh Xuan, Cau Giay, 7/10 public high schools have decreased benchmark compared to 2024. Among them are top schools such as Yen Hoa High School (decreased by 0.17 points/subject scores); Cau Giay High School (decreased by 0.08 points/subject); Nhan Chinh High School (decreased by 0.25 points/subject)...
In Area 2 (Tay Ho, Ba Dinh), 2/4 schools have reduced their benchmark scores: Nguyen Trai High School (reduced by 0.95 points/subject, equivalent to nearly 3 points/3 subjects for admission); Tay Ho High School (0.30 points/subject)... Many schools in suburban areas also reduced their scores. For example, Ung Hoa B High School reduced by 1.27 points/subject; My Duc A High School reduced by 1.18 points/subject; Thanh Oai B High School reduced by 1.3 points/subject...
This year, the benchmark scores between inner-city and suburban schools still have a significant difference. The reason is partly due to the quality of training, but more importantly, there is no competition in the number of candidates taking the exam. For example, in Ung Hoa district (old), there are 5 high schools and the benchmark scores of all schools are below 15/30 points (below 5 points/subject). There are 3/5 schools with a benchmark score of 10/30 points, lower than the school with the highest score of 15.5 points. The competition ratio of these schools is below 1 (considering the first choice).
Bac Luong Son High School has a benchmark score of 10/30 points, the number of candidates registered for the first choice is less than the assigned quota (396 candidates registered for 495 quotas). Minh Quang High School has a benchmark score of 10/30 points with a competition ratio of 1/0.73... Even in the inner city area like Phuc Loi High School, this year the benchmark score dropped by 2.72 points/subject compared to last year because the quota is higher than the number of registered students, the competition ratio is 1/0.9.
