Mr. Thoi… stopped being poor.

More than a year ago, when mentioning the family of Mr. Tran Van Thoi (Thang Tien 3 village, Hoa An commune, Krong Pac district), many people shook their heads in dismay. The charity house that was built decades ago has deteriorated and no one cares to repair it, the mixed garden with all kinds of yellow plants has no one cares to take care of it. The wife and 3 children are immersed in sadness and melancholy while Mr. Thoi is immersed in alcohol...

Mr. Thoi's family has 4 sao of land, used to dig ponds to raise fish, grow pepper, coffee, fruit trees... but the farming was not effective, so the family was stuck in poverty. Perhaps because of that, Mr. Thoi became depressed and turned to alcohol. The two older children had to drop out of school to work as factory workers in Binh Duong , only the youngest child, who is in 9th grade, is at risk of having to drop out of school early. The family's most valuable asset is a breeding cow bought with a loan from the Social Policy Bank.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan Huong, Vice Chairwoman of Hoa An Commune People's Committee, still remembers the time in early 2024 when she joined the delegation to give Tet gifts to poor households in the locality. It was just after 9 am, Mr. Thoi was already staggering under the influence of alcohol. Walking around his family's garden, Ms. Huong thought to herself, with land and irrigation water like this, a family cannot be poor forever.

On the one hand, she proposed to the Party Committee, People's Committee, and Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Hoa An commune the idea of mobilizing the entire political system to join hands to help Mr. Thoi's family implement the model of converting mixed gardens to growing new coffee varieties. On the other hand, she invited Mr. Thoi to the committee to grasp his thoughts and aspirations, using his family's circumstances to persuade and persuade. Mr. Thoi, who was still hesitant and hesitant, voluntarily wrote a commitment to quit drinking and make efforts to promote the effectiveness of the supported model.

In April 2024, the entire political system of Hoa An commune launched a poverty reduction model for Mr. Thoi's family. In particular, Ms. Huong directly contributed 500 grafted coffee trees; the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the commune supported 5 million VND to rent an excavator to destroy old crops, level the ground, and dig holes to plant coffee; the Red Cross of the commune supported 5 million VND for the cost of buying fertilizer.

After more than 1 year of implementing the model, Mr. Thoi’s family life has clearly “changed” when 500 grafted coffee trees have grown well and are in the process of bearing fruit. Most of his time during the day is spent taking care of the coffee garden, from watering, composting cow manure to fertilizing the plants to preventing pests. From being drunk in the morning and drunk in the afternoon, Mr. Thoi has “stopped” drinking alcohol completely, enthusiastically sharing his experience with local people about choosing coffee varieties and “tips” to prevent stem borers, mealybugs, etc.

Mrs. Lai Thi Hoa, Mr. Thoi's wife, happily boasted that last Tet, her two eldest sons sent money to their parents to repaint the house, and the youngest son finished 10th grade with good academic results. At the end of this year, they will harvest their first coffee crop and will certainly apply to escape poverty, fulfilling their promise to those who have wholeheartedly helped their family.

The joy of Mr. Thoi's family is also the common joy of the cadres and party members of Hoa An commune when they prove to the people that no one can be "sustainably poor" if they are determined to implement and boldly change their thinking and way of doing things.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan Huong, Vice Chairwoman of Hoa An Commune People's Committee, shared that in order to "leave no one behind", it is necessary not only to provide immediate support but also to continuously accompany, encourage, supervise, both hand-holding and guiding, and arousing the will to rise up of the poor households themselves. This is an effective method that the Hoa An Commune political system has gradually expanded over time, helping many poor and disadvantaged households to truly change all aspects of their lives.
