Hong Thai is the commune with the largest peanut growing area in the old Van Lang district (now Hoang Van Thu commune). However, in the past, people mainly planted native peanut varieties and did not pay attention to applying science and technology, so the productivity and quality of the products were not high.
Based on that reality, in July 2023, the District Department of Agriculture and Environment (old) coordinated with the People's Committee of Hong Thai Commune (old); District Agricultural Service Center (old); Center for Training and Research on Plant and Animal Breeding - Thai Nguyen University and Bach Vy Cooperative (old Na Sam town, now Na Sam commune) to implement a red peanut production linkage model with 106 participating households, an area of 9.25 hectares.
As one of the first household to register to participate in the model, Mr. Trieu Van Loi, Lung Duc village, Hoang Van Thu commune, said: In 2023, my family planted red peanuts according to VietGAP standards with an area of about 4 stars. In December 2023, my family harvested over 500 kg of fresh peanuts (5% higher than before), the selling price was stable at 20,000 VND/kg, 3,000 to 5,000 VND/kg higher. Seeing the effectiveness, in 2024 my family continued to maintain, increasing to 2 crops with a total area of about 8 stars, the output reached about 1.5 tons of fresh peanuts, bringing in nearly 30 million VND in income. This year's peanut crop, my family continues to increase the area to 1 month and is currently preparing for harvest. Although the weather is not favorable this year, the expected output is still over 1 ton of fresh peanuts.
Similar to Mr. Loi's family, Mr. Hoang Van Phuong's family in Ban Nhung village, Hoang Van Thu commune also participated in the model and brought positive results. Mr. Phuong said: In 2023, with the propaganda of the commune government, my family participates in the model of growing red peanuts according to VietGAP standards. The family was supported with seeds, fertilizers, processes, care techniques and signed a contract to consume the products. stimulated, my family converted 2 stars of ineffective farming fields to grow peanuts. At the end of 2023, the family harvested over 3 quintals of fresh peanuts, bringing in an income of about 6 million VND. From the effectiveness of the model, from 2024 to now, my family has continued to maintain and increase to 2 crops with a total area of about 4 stars.
To effectively implement the model, the agencies and units coordinate the implementation of the model have supported people with L14 red peanut seeds and fertilizers; organized training courses on planting techniques, care, and pest control for people; and coordinate with commune agricultural extension officers to monitor and guide people in keeping diaries and implementing care measures according to the correct procedures.
According to the assessment of the professional agency, the L14 red peanut variety is suitable for local soil conditions, has high yield, good quality, concentrated flowering, firm seed ratio, and good resistance to pests and diseases. The planting method according to VietGAP standards also helps increase productivity and product quality. specifically, the yield reaches 52.4 quintals/ha, an increase of 2.6 quintals/ha (equivalent to an increase of about 5%) compared to traditional farming. In addition, with the quality and large, beautiful product design, red peanuts are also sold on the market at a stable price of 20,000 VND/kg of fresh peanuts, 3,000 to 5,000 VND/kg higher.
After the model was successfully implemented, from 2024 to now, peanut growers in the commune have increased peanut planting to 2 crops to increase production efficiency. On average, the peanut planting area of the commune is maintained at 9-10 hectares/crop, with some crops reaching 12-13 hectares (depending on the weather at the time of planting and the needs of the people).
Ms. Cao Thi Minh Hong, Head of the Economic Department of Hoang Van Thu Commune, said: Currently, the commune's red peanut products have been granted VietGAP certification. In the coming time, the department will continue to promote and mobilize people to maintain and expand the peanut growing area, while complying with the care process according to VietGAP standards to ensure product quality, creating a premise to build a local agricultural product brand in the market.
From the model of growing red peanuts according to VietGAP standards, people have an additional income of 2 to 5 million VND/peanut crop. The success of the model also contributes to changing the awareness and old farming practices of farmers, thus opening up prospects for sustainable economic development for people.
