Intact memory
Since the identity of martyr Trinh Van Hai (born in 1952) was accurately determined through the DNA sample of relatives, the family of Mr. Trinh Van Lai (born in 1958, Dong Thanh commune, Thanh Hoa province) has been bustling with neighbors coming and going, laughing from morning to night, everyone is happy for the martyr and his family to have found each other after many years of separation.
The day we and the comrades of the Commune Police came to his house, Mr. Lai left his farming work and rushed back to receive the guests. When Major Vu Trong Phuc - Head of the Dong Thanh Commune Police announced that the authorities had identified the remains of martyr Trinh Van Hai, Mr. Lai and his sister's tears kept flowing. We understood that those were tears of happiness, tears of faith and hope that had been coming true for many years.
Ms. Trinh Thi Mech and Mr. Trinh Van Lai were moved when hearing the information from the Commune Police that they had identified the remains of martyr Trinh Van Hai.
Mr. Lai confided: "Since the day we heard the news but did not have official documents, my family and I were both happy and worried. We were happy that we had found our brother (martyr Trinh Van Hai), but worried that if the information was incorrect, we would be very disappointed. I couldn't sleep all night, tossing and turning, anxiously waiting until tomorrow to meet the commune police to receive the notice so that I could feel at ease. Now my family's faith and hope has come true. We thank the Party, the State and the Ministry of Public Security for their concern for the martyrs and their relatives. To be honest, without the concern of the Party and the State, we would be helpless and wouldn't know how to find and bring my brother back to his homeland.”
Now over 90 years old, Mrs. Trinh Thi Mech (Dong Thanh commune, Thanh Hoa province) still clearly remembers the image of her younger brother (martyr Trinh Van Hai) from the first day he joined the army. "He had just finished 10th grade, not yet 18 years old, when he volunteered to join the army. He was still very young, he didn't know anything. Hearing that his cousin's son was joining the army, he was very excited and volunteered. He was short, had to wear high-heeled rubber sandals, and added a few handfuls of gravel to his shirt and pants pockets to have enough weight for the medical examination. At that time, there was a subsidy system of poverty and hardship. The night before joining the army, the Youth Union cooked a pot of eel porridge for a party, each new soldier had a few bowls of porridge to prepare for the next day's departure, but there was no bowl of rice...".
At this point, Mrs. Mech's heart stopped, she patted her chest with her hand, looked up at her brother's portrait on the altar, and tears kept flowing. Mrs. Mech continued, martyr Trinh Van Hai had been on the battlefield for more than a year when he died in combat. The family was even more heartbroken when the two cousins joined the army on the same day, in the same unit, but the uncle's son found and brought back his remains, but martyred The two could not be found anywhere!
"My father passed away early, my mother raised 4 children alone. When she was alive, my mother was always in pain, sad, and sorry for her younger brother who sacrificed himself at such a young age. Before she passed away, my mother told her siblings to try to find and bring Hai back to their hometown to be with their ancestors and their parents, but the sea and sky are so vast, where can we find him? Without the attention of the Party and the State, we don't know when our family will be able to find him! Now, no matter how difficult it is, even if we sell our house, we are determined to bring him back to his homeland, his family, his ancestors...", Mrs. Mech affirmed.
After many years of searching and waiting in vain, the family of martyr Trinh Quang Lam (born in 1952, Nga An commune, Thanh Hoa province) was fortunate to receive joy when the authorities accurately identified the remains of the martyr through DNA samples. Ms. Trinh Thi Hong (born in 1953, Nga An commune, Thanh Hoa province), the younger sister of martyr Trinh Quang Lam, sadly said: "That year, my parents did not let me go, and the commune did not call me because my family already had a martyr brother (martyr Trinh Quang Huu), but Lam still volunteered to join the army. He also encouraged his parents and family to only join the Navy, train and stay in Hai Phong , and not go to the South to fight, so everyone could rest." assured. However, after completing the training, the unit moved to the South to fight the Americans and he never returned...".
Ms. Hong said: "When Mr. Huu sacrificed and we didn't know where he was, the family received the death notice of Mr. Lam. My parents were stunned, sad, fell ill for many years and then passed away early. Because of Mr. Lam's sacrifice, my mother, who was an optimistic and smiling woman, became irritable. She went crazy because she missed her son, so she burned all the documents and photos related to Mr. Lam, so now there is no photo of Mr. Lam left to worship...".
Lighting incense and standing in front of the ancestral altar, Mr. Trinh Van Tuan (born in 1958), younger brother of martyrs Trinh Quang Lam, prayed: I hope the souls of the martyrs "lived wisely and died sacredly" to bless and protect other families, so that they can soon identify the martyrs' identities to connect with their families and relatives.
Command from the heart
Over the years, the Party and State have always identified the search and collection of martyrs' remains as an important political task, demonstrating the nation's morality of "remembering the source of water when drinking water". In order to facilitate the search and collection of martyrs' remains and accurately identify martyrs, the Ministry of Public Security has deployed the construction of an Identity database integrating DNA information data and proposed that the Government implement a project to collect and analyze DNA samples of martyrs' relatives to identify the remains of martyrs with missing information, in accordance with the direction of the Government and the National Steering Committee on the search and collection of martyrs' remains.
The Project has the task of collecting DNA samples from martyrs' relatives to build a national gene bank, as a scientific database for comparison and identification of martyrs' remains. structured, the People's Public Security force is assigned to coordinate with medical units, the army, and local authorities to approach, collect, and identify DNA samples from martyrs' relatives national. The collection of DNA samples is carried out scientifically, strictly, according to procedures and completely free of charge, in which priority is given to taking samples from the martyrs' biological mothers and their maternal relatives, because these are direct bloodline genes, providing high accuracy. From here, a new opportunity has opened up for hundreds of thousands of "unknown" martyrs to soon have their identities fully and accurately "authenticated".
Currently, there are about 500,000 martyrs nationwide whose identities have not been determined, of which about 200,000 remains have not been collected and 300,000 remains have been buried but lack information. In Thanh Hoa province alone, there are 37,720 martyrs whose information has not been determined, with a total of 39,137 cases of relatives using to collect DNA samples.
To implement the Project, Thanh Hoa Provincial Police coordinate with the Department of Home Affairs and socio-political organizations to review, verify, collect, and clean up information on relatives of unidentified martyrs, and update data on the National Population Database. During the first peak period from May 12 to May 16, Thanh Hoa Provincial Police and functional forces collected 933 DNA samples from the martyrs' biological mothers and one case of a close relative on the mother's side of the martyr. These are extremely valuable DNA samples to enrich scientific information and data for comparison with the martyrs' DNA data, thereby finding the identities of the martyrs, and lighting up the hope of families in the journey to find the martyrs' remains.
And the clearest evidence is that the authorities initially identified two cases, martyr Trinh Quang Lam (Nga An commune) and martyr Trinh Van Hai (Dong Thanh commune) through DNA samples. The initial results have many profound humanistic meanings, demonstrating the spirit of "repaying gratitude", showing gratitude to those who sacrificed for the independence and freedom of the Fatherland, while affirming the important role of the police force in the journey of connecting the past - present - future with heart and responsibility.
Thanh Hoa Provincial Police are continuing to launch a peak campaign to collect DNA samples for relatives of unidentified martyrs in Thanh Hoa province for the second time. The campaign will be deployed for 18 days (from July 3 to July 20) in 166 communes and wards in the province with the synchronous participation of the entire political system and the positive response of many families of martyrs.
During this peak period, Thanh Hoa Provincial Police strived to successfully collect 35,626 DNA samples to serve the purpose of updating gene bank data and comparing and finding the identities of unknown martyrs. In order to collect data effectively, police units and forces in the province established working groups, fully and thoughtfully prepared equipment and facilities to actively and proactively coordinate with functional forces to review, make lists, collect complete and accurate information on martyrs' relatives to serve the construction of information data, and update DNA information into the National Population Database. In addition to directly going to each house to collect DNA samples for the elderly and lonely, Thanh Hoa Provincial Police deployed many working groups, dividing the area for centralized collection.
The soldiers who sacrificed for the Fatherland are the glory and pride of the families and relatives of the martyrs. It would be less painful if the remains of the martyrs were identified and returned to their homeland with the longing and longing of their relatives. With the command from the heart, the soldiers of Thanh Hoa Provincial Police have been making every effort to continue the journey of collecting DNA samples for the second phase, ensuring completion on schedule and according to the set goals.
