Escape poverty from the movement of accompanying young people to start a business

Mr. Bui Van Tu is successful with the bamboo rat farming model for high economic efficiency.

Born and raised in a farming family, life was quite difficult, in 2006, after graduating from high school, young man Bui Van Tu was admitted to the Preparatory University. However, due to the difficult family situation, Tu temporarily put his dream on hold. Tu confided: “I felt sorry for my mother's hard work and did not want to be a burden, so after nearly a year of entering university, I dropped out of the program and returned to my hometown to help my family and take care of my younger siblings. It was not until 2010, when my family's economy was more stable, that I started to study at a secondary school and transferred to a university majoring in finance and accounting.”

Returning to his hometown to start a business, he participated in the Youth Union and the youth movement. In addition to completing the tasks assigned by the locality well, he borrowed capital to invest in more than 1 hectare of land to build a comprehensive economic model of growing sugarcane, raising goats, cows and sow. However, due to lack of experience in care, the crops and livestock were stunted and could not grow. "There were times when I failed and almost lost my capital, but I learned lessons to do better," Tu confided.

In 2022, the Thach Thanh District Youth Union (old) coordinated with functional departments to open training courses on transferring science and technology applied to cultivation, animal husbandry, etc. Through visits and learning about economic models in other localities organized by the District Youth Union, and receiving support from loans to help young people start businesses, Tu realized that raising bamboo rats has many advantages such as fast reproduction, few diseases, and no need for care. Moreover, commercial bamboo rat meat sells well, has little risk, is suitable for local conditions, and the main food sources are readily available such as bamboo roots, reeds, sugarcane, corn, etc. With an initial investment of more than 20 million VND, he experimented with raising 6 pairs of parent bamboo rats. Once he had mastered the technique, at the end of 2023, he boldly invested more than 500 million VND to build a barn system, ensuring coolness in the summer and warmth in the winter. From the initial pairs of bamboo rats, up to now, his farm has had 100 bamboo rats and peach-cheeked bamboo rats. Currently, he regularly supplies bamboo rats for breeding at prices ranging from 1 million to 1.5 million VND/pair of bamboo rats; 3.5 million VND/pair of peach-cheeked bamboo rats; commercial bamboo rats are supplied to markets in and outside the province, at prices ranging from 600,000 to 700,000 VND/kg. After deducting expenses, his monthly income is from 25 to 30 million VND...

To increase his family's income and create more jobs for local workers, Mr. Tu also grows bamboo shoots and buys more land to grow acacia trees... Mr. Tu shared: "In the coming time, in addition to raising livestock, I will expand the scale of production, including contributing to expand the area of growing acacia trees, growing bamboo shoots to supply the market and pruning trees to serve as the main source of food for bamboo rats. This investment will cost a lot of money and is a difficulty for me, but I believe that with my own efforts, along with the support of the local Party Committee and government, I will be successful."

In addition, as the head of the economic development youth club, Mr. Tu also provides technical support and creates for conditions 13 local youth to participate in developing livestock models such as bamboo rats, goats, chickens, wild honey bees... to maximize local advantages to promote the economy. Club members have contributed and established a fund with an amount of more than 80 million VND to lend to young people for economic development. Currently, the club is developing 8 economic models, each model has an average income of about 120 million VND/year.

Party cell secretary and village head of Thach Cu, Bui Thi Nu, said: The success of the livestock model implemented by young man Bui Van Tu not only brings income to his family but also contributes to changing production thinking, opening up economic development opportunities for many young people in the village.
