Ship stranded since early 2023
According to the records of Nha Trang Maritime Port Authority, on February 26, 2023, Thanh Hung 06 ship (Vietnamese nationality) was traveling from Dong Nai to Cam Ranh, when passing through the sea area of Phuoc Dinh commune, it lost its rudder. Due to the influence of bad weather, big waves and strong winds, Thanh Hung 06 ship drifted and ran aground in Bai Thong sea area. At the time of running aground, Thanh Hung 06 ship was not carrying any cargo, there were about 600 liters of oil on board in the oil tank with the valve locked, the ship was completely on land, the bottom was sand and coral, the ship was upright, not tilted, the ship had a hole in the bottom, water flooded the engine room and cargo holds. The entire engine system of the ship was not working, the operating status of other maritime equipment has not been determined. This is a dry cargo ship, nearly 80m long, with a total tonnage of more than 4,500 tons.

Thanh Hung 06 ship is the mortgaged property of Thanh Hung Real Estate Trading Company Limited (Ho Chi Minh City) with the Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, Nha Be Branch (Ho Chi Minh City) and was leased to LK Transport Company Limited for exploitation. After the ship ran aground, the Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development assigned it to the Execution Department of Thuan Nam District, Ninh Thuan Province (old) to recover the ship to settle the debt. At the time of the initial grounding, through working sessions, the representative of LK Transport Company Limited said that the company had contacted a company specializing in salvage to hire a tugboat to pull Thanh Hung 06 ship out of the grounded position and bring it to the factory for repair. However, due to difficulties in negotiating costs, the above work was not carried out.
Mr. Tran Tuan Hiep - Director of Nha Trang Maritime Port Authority said that immediately after receiving information about the incident of Thanh Hung 06 ship running aground, Nha Trang Maritime Port Authority went to the scene to coordinate with relevant local agencies to verify information about the incident. After that, Nha Trang Maritime Port Authority established a Team to collect initial information. The Team inspected the current status of Thanh Hung 06 ship and worked with the ship's captain. Nha Trang Maritime Port Authority also invited representatives of LK Transport Company Limited and captain of Thanh Hung 06 ship many times to work on handling issues related to the ship's grounding, but the parties did not come to work as requested. Therefore, the relocation of the stranded ship has been delayed until now.
Resolute handling to ensure maritime safety
Recently, the Provincial People's Committee approved the plan to salvage sunken assets of the Thanh Hung 06 ship. According to the plan, the construction unit mobilized 2 cranes, 2 bulldozers, 2 trucks, 3 pumps, 1 underwater cutting system along with many wind-rock cutting machines, welding machines, buoys... and 15 workers to cut the ship into small pieces, move it ashore, and clear the stranded ship area. A representative of the ship-breaking construction unit said that since mid-June 2025, the unit has coordinated with functional forces to inspect oil tanks and pump out remaining fuel to prevent pollution of the marine environment. To ensure that waste generated from the ship-breaking process is not affected, the construction unit uses motor vehicles to build a dike system around the ship and a trench system to collect and gather waste and hazardous waste generated during the cutting process so as not to affect the environment and the beach. At the same time, the implementation process always ensures the arrangement of equipment, tools, and materials for fire prevention and fighting, and environmental incident response.
The Thanh Hung 06 ship was stranded for a long time without any safety measures, no one to look after or maintain it, and the owner of the Thanh Hung 06 ship was not responsible for handling and moving the ship away from the stranded location, leading to potential risks of maritime safety, maritime security and environmental pollution in the area. Therefore, Nha Trang Maritime Port Authority requested the construction units to quickly move and clear the Thanh Hung 06 ship from the shoal to ensure maritime safety, security and environmental protection in the stranded area.
According to Mr. Tran Tuan Hiep, the Thanh Hung 06 ship was mortgaged at the bank and the ship owner denied responsibility for salvaging it, and had no way to repay the bank. Therefore, the Civil Judgment Enforcement Office of Thuan Nam District (old) seized the property and organized an auction of the ship to pay the money to the Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, Nha Be Branch. After that, a local unit won the auction and hired a construction unit to cut the ship into pieces, move it ashore and sell it. It is expected that the salvaging of the Thanh Hung 06 ship will be completed on July 25.
