After 30 years of establishing diplomatic relations (July 12, 1995 - July 12, 2025), Vietnam and the United States have opened a new chapter of historical significance in the relationship between the two countries.
In particular, since upgrading the relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in September 2023, economic relations between Vietnam and the United States have had many new steps of cooperation and development. This is also the foundation for Vietnam-US bilateral trade to soon reach the 200 billion USD mark in the near future.
Top Partner
According to trade experts, since the Vietnam-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) was signed in 2000, the structure of Vietnam's exports to the US has changed significantly.
Previously, Vietnam mainly exported to the US market light industrial products processed according to orders from foreign companies such as textiles, footwear, etc., now in the list of important export products to the US, there are more processed and manufactured industrial products, agricultural, forestry and aquatic products that are purely Vietnamese but have an increasingly high level of processing and added value.
On the contrary, imported goods from the United States with the largest import turnover include industrial goods with high technology content and added value and raw materials used as input for production including computers, electronic products and components...
According to experts, the import and export structure between the two countries shows a very important feature of the bilateral economic and trade relations between Vietnam and the United States, which is the complementary nature of the two economies.
Specifically, the United States has a large demand for importing typical agricultural products or products in which Vietnam has strengths based on favorable natural conditions and labor advantages in many fields such as textiles, footwear, machinery and electronic equipment, etc.
Meanwhile, the United States is considered an important source of imported raw materials for Vietnam's production, providing source products such as cotton, animal feed, corn, soybeans, chemicals, machinery, technology, etc. to meet the rapidly expanding needs of an economy with a high export growth rate.
“Importing this source product from the United States creates an advantage for Vietnam to clean up the supply chain because the input resources for production have clear origins and certificates of origin,” experts pointed out.
Recently, during a working trip to the United States to work with the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), the Department of Energy (DOE) and relevant agencies, Special Envoy of the Prime Minister, Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien attended and witnessed the signing ceremony and announcement of cooperation agreements, contracts for the purchase of machinery, equipment, raw materials, services and goods between Vietnamese and US enterprises.
Speaking at the signing and announcement ceremony, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien affirmed that after 30 years of establishing diplomatic relations, 10 years of establishing comprehensive partnership and 2 years of upgrading relations to comprehensive strategic partnership, the relationship between the two countries has been developing positively and steadily in all fields.
In particular, the economic-trade=investment pillar plays a key role in promoting the overall bilateral relationship.
In terms of investment, the United States is a key market that many Vietnamese enterprises are targeting to boost their import and export. In addition, Vietnam is also attracting and receiving high-tech investment capital from the US market, especially in the field of microchips and semiconductors, to keep up with the world's scientific and technological era.
In particular, Vietnam now plays an important role in the US global supply chain, while US businesses have made great contributions to Vietnam's economic transformation and development.
Elevate the relationship
According to information from the Vietnam Trade Office in Houston, Texas (USA), in early June 2025, L&V Food Supply and CT Choice, import and distribution companies headquartered in Houston, coordinated with partners to directly import and transport the first batch of fresh lychees of the 2025 crop from Bac Giang province by air to Houston.

Fresh and delicious lychee is a Vietnamese specialty fruit that has been imported and distributed by L&V Food Supply and CT Choice Company for sale not only in Vietnamese and American commercial areas in Texas but also to hundreds of points of sale in dozens of states throughout the United States.
Ms. Diem Chinh - owner of L&V Food Supply and CT Choice said that the company has over 20 years of experience in import and export with a passion and dedication to bringing Vietnamese goods to the United States. Realizing the aspiration, the company has imported many types of Vietnamese fruits and foods with partners to sell in the United States on a large scale.
With experience and determination to support the community, this year, fresh lychee and Dien grapefruit are officially imported Vietnamese fresh fruit products, attracting many customers.
Fresh fruit products from Vietnam are being sold simultaneously at many of the largest Asian supermarkets and markets in Texas, USA in June 2025 (including large supermarkets in the Houston and Dallas areas).
In addition, fruits and foods imported by L&V Food Supply and CT Choice have also been imported and distributed to major supermarkets such as H-Mart, HEB... in the West Coast states of the United States.
In recent years, to promote trade and investment, the Vietnam Trade Office in Houston has been strengthening coordination with overseas Vietnamese export enterprises to advise, support, introduce partners and promote Vietnamese products in the United States.
At the same time, coordinate and bring US business delegations to learn about/purchase goods, attend domestic trade and investment promotion conferences to help businesses connect with new partners, expand import and export scale, contributing to promoting bilateral trade relations.
In particular, the Vietnam Trade Office in Houston is focusing on Vietnam's strengths and regional specialties to help businesses import and do business in the United States in general and Texas in particular.
Similarly, in June 2025, the Consulate General and the Vietnam Trade Office in Houston organized working sessions, met with representatives of a number of large enterprises in the industrial and energy sectors; discussed and worked with chambers of commerce and industry associations in the Southern United States, and supported partners in learning about the investment environment and opportunities in Vietnam.
In addition, the Houston Trade Branch has been supporting THACO to promote its product image in the United States and has introduced a number of partners for production and export cooperation, and supported a delegation of US businesses to visit the factory at THACO Chu Lai Industrial Park.
According to experts, Apple, Nike and hundreds of other US companies choose Vietnam as their destination because the Vietnamese market has a lot of potential and opportunities for them. If Vietnam continues to make efforts to create a favorable, fair, predictable investment environment and continues to improve the legal environment, and values innovation, US investors will continue to come to Vietnam to invest and do business.
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to Vietnam Marc E. Knapper said that 2025 is the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the United States.
The US side wishes that 2025 will be a pivotal year to continue promoting the cooperative relationship between the two countries to a new height, realizing the commitment and content of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership; in which, the pillar of economic and trade cooperation will play a key role in promoting the overall bilateral relationship.
Minister Nguyen Hong Dien said that the complementary nature of the Vietnamese and US economies is an important feature that helps economic and trade cooperation between the two countries develop increasingly strongly, harmoniously and sustainably, ensuring an important foundation and maintaining national interests in bilateral cooperation.
“Vietnam always considers the United States a leading important partner; at the same time, it wishes to promote economic, trade and investment relations with the United States in a comprehensive and sustainable manner, contributing to enhancing understanding and strategic trust between the two countries,” Minister Nguyen Hong Dien emphasized./.
