Lao Cai: Giving Opportunities – Creating a Better Future for Workers

The seasonal labor cooperation program between Lao Cai province and Korea not only opens up opportunities to increase income for workers but also serves as a bridge for workers to access advanced agricultural knowledge. Thereby, helping to sustainably reduce poverty and improve the lives of people, especially in mountainous areas and ethnic minority areas.

More than 200 workers from localities in Lao Cai province were present at the Provincial Employment Service Center in mid-June 2025 to participate in a direct interview with the Working Group from Goryeong District, North Gyeongsang Province (Korea) to participate in seasonal agricultural work in Korea.

This event is not only a bridge for employment but also a vivid demonstration of the effective and sustainable cooperation between Lao Cai and Korean localities.

This is an activity within the framework of the cooperation program between the Department of Home Affairs of Lao Cai province and Goryeong district on the selection of seasonal workers for the first phase in 2025.

To thoroughly prepare for this important interview, the Provincial Employment Service Center played a key role, actively verifying each candidate's information, providing guidance on completing the application, and especially organizing extensive propaganda about the policies and benefits that workers will enjoy when working abroad.

“We have used various forms of propaganda such as posting information on websites, social networks, and organizing direct conferences in localities. This program is considered a golden opportunity, contributing to promoting the development of the agricultural and rural economy of the province.”

Mr. Tran Trong Giap, Deputy Director of Lao Cai Provincial Employment Service Center.

According to the plan, the first phase will select 100 female workers, 13 male workers and 15 couples to work in the agricultural sector in Goryeong, for a period of 8 months. The committed salary is extremely attractive, about more than 40 million VND/person/month, not including income from overtime. This is truly a dream number for many workers in rural areas, promising to create a significant economic boost for many families.

At the meeting, the Korean partner interviewed each worker directly, focusing on their agricultural experience, health status, family conditions and goals when deciding to leave their homeland.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong, 45 years old, from Tran Yen commune, emotionally shared: “At home, I mainly grow cinnamon. The work is hard and the income is unstable. When the staff of the Employment Service Center came to the commune and village to inform me about the seasonal work program in Korea, I was very happy. The staff gave me very enthusiastic instructions, clearly explained the work, benefits and necessary conditions, so I felt very secure. If I am lucky enough to be selected, I will try my best to work well to earn more income to send back to my family.”

Similarly, Mr. Ly A Hu and Ms. Lo Thi Nguyet, Pung Luong commune, also expressed their hope: “The recent rice and corn crops have failed due to floods, and our family’s economy is increasingly difficult. Now that we know about this program, my husband and I have decided to leave our children with our grandparents so we can go to work. Hopefully, with the money we save, our family’s life will be less difficult.”

Mr. Jeong Jeong Su, Head of the Goryeong District Agricultural Policy Team, expressed his confidence in the quality of Lao Cai Province's labor force. He said: “Goryeong District is a developed agricultural region, we are in great need of hard-working, healthy workers. We are committed to ensuring a safe working environment, complying with all terms of the contract, and hope that this cooperative relationship will continue to develop. According to the plan, after this interview, the list of successful workers will be announced soon. The relevant parties will quickly complete the documents and procedures so that the workers can leave the country as soon as possible.”

In early July, 143 workers who passed the interview were able to attend an orientation class before going to work seasonally in the agricultural sector in Korea.

Here, workers are equipped with legal knowledge, culture and necessary skills before leaving the country. At the same time, they learn basic Korean, learn about Korean culture and labor behavior, labor safety and hygiene in the agricultural sector and have health check-ups to prepare for the first flight, scheduled for early September 2025.

Sending workers to work in high-income markets such as Korea is considered an important and strategic solution of Lao Cai province in the work of job creation and sustainable poverty reduction. The program not only contributes to improving people's lives but also helps workers access advanced science and technology, thereby improving their skills and industrial style. These are valuable opportunities for Lao Cai workers to reach out to the world and create a better future.
