Localization solutions for electrical equipment

VHO - "Research and development of medium voltage switchboard production" is one of two projects that has just been awarded the Tran Dai Nghia Award in 2025. This is also an innovative project in the industry, contributing to increasing the localization rate of high-tech equipment in the electricity, reducing investment costs as well as dependence on foreign industry countries.

Currently, the industrialization and modernization of the country is taking place strongly along with the development of science , technology and digital transformation, so the demand for electrical equipment, especially medium voltage switchboards serving companies, industrial parks and the national power system is increasing. Meanwhile, the supply of these electrical equipment mainly depends on imports from abroad. This not only increases the cost of purchasing equipment but is also difficult to control technically and difficult to operate in the weather conditions and tropical monsoon climate of Vietnam.

From the above practice, the group of authors including engineers, who are also leaders of Asia Industrial Technology Joint Stock Company (ACIT) Pham Dinh Thang, Doan Ky Ba and Bui Van Dam have researched and successfully developed medium voltage switchboards that meet international standards. The research topic focuses on two main product lines: 24 kV and 40.5 kV medium voltage switchboards, strictly following the IEC 62271-200 standard (an important standard in power management and distribution, ensuring safety and efficiency of medium voltage power systems).

Before being manufactured and supplied to users, these products must undergo a very rigorous testing process at KEMA, Netherlands (a world- leading electrical equipment testing organization) such as: Short circuit fault current resistance, industrial frequency voltage resistance, lightning impulse voltage, temperature rise test, arc protection test... The successful testing results of the two products mentioned above have proven the product quality and demonstrated the company's ability to master technology, design, and manufacture according to international standards.

Through research, the 24 kV and 40.5 kV MV-Gsec medium voltage switchgear products manufactured by ACIT are the main product line, which the company focuses on investing in to continuously improve product quality. The 24 kV Metal-Clad pull-out medium voltage switchgear is the first product manufactured and launched by ACIT in 2013. In 2014, the company continued to research and manufacture the 24 kV MV-Gsec medium voltage switchgear and after supplying it to the market, it received many positive feedbacks from customers.

Success after success, in 2015, ACIT successfully designed, integrated and launched the 40.5 kV MV36-Gsec pull-out cabinet line to the market. Thus, from 2014 to 2015, the company has supplied hundreds of 24 kV and 40.5 kV medium voltage pull-out cabinets to the market. These are all product lines that customers require high quality and strict technical requirements. The products are installed in EVN's 110 kV transformer stations in Nam Ninh, Giao Thuy, Hai Hau communes ( Ninh Binh province), Song Cong ward (Thai Nguyen province), ... as a result of the quality of this cabinet line.

However, by 2016, in response to the increasing demand of the domestic and foreign markets for Metal-Clad medium voltage cabinets, Asia Industrial Engineering Joint Stock Company continued to invest in more in-depth research on two lines of medium voltage cabinets 24 kV (MV24-Gsec) and 40.5 kV (MV36-Gsec). The "sweet fruits" did not let down the "nurturers", in 2019, ACIT was proud to be the first company in Vietnam to successfully research and test both 24 kV and 40.5 kV cabinets at KEMA Laboratory, Netherlands - one of the three leading electrical laboratories in the world.

According to Mr. Pham Dinh Thang, Chairman of the Board of Directors and General Director of ACIT Company, Head of the project, before receiving the Tran Dai Nghia Award in 2025, the project "Research and development of medium voltage switchboard production" had twice received the Certificate of Key Industrial Products of Hanoi City in 2020 and 2023; achieved the title of Vietnam National Brand product in 2024 along with many other prestigious titles. The company's success in researching, testing and putting into production medium voltage switchboard products to supply the market not only contributes to the modernization of the electricity industry but also improves the design, inspection and competitiveness of Vietnamese enterprises in the high-tech market. Thereby opening up many prospects in developing national industrial infrastructure.

In addition, mastering medium voltage switchgear technology also creates momentum for the development of supporting technology products, building a domestic supply chain and promoting green and sustainable industrial transformation in Vietnam. In the coming time, ACIT's research team will continue to research and produce 24 kV and 40.5 kV RMU medium voltage switches with a localization rate of up to 80%. These products are all manufactured on modern production lines, meet international standards and are competitive with global brands.

Evaluating the project "Research and development of medium voltage switchboard production" which has just won the Tran Dai Nghia Award in 2025, Professor, Dr. Chu Hoang Ha, Vice President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology said: "The project has made important contributions to the process of mastering technology, localizing equipment, reducing dependence on imports, and at the same time improving the competitiveness of Vietnamese enterprises in the field of electrical technology. In addition, Vietnam is promoting industrialization and modernization, so the demand for energy is high, especially electricity. Therefore, the fact that enterprises proactively research and successfully produce electrical equipment with quality equivalent to famous brands at lower prices needs to be commended and replicated."
