April is usually the busiest time of the year for the spice market, especially pepper. However, this year, the global pepper market has fallen into a state of stagnation due to the impact of trade tensions. Import demand from many countries has decreased sharply, while unclear tariff policies have made businesses cautious in signing contracts.
However, long-term forecasts still highly value the potential for pepper price increases. According to the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), in the short term, domestic pepper prices may remain stable or decrease slightly due to unstable export demand and limited supply. However, in the medium and long term, global supply shortages may push pepper prices up again.

Experts advise taking advantage of the current good prices to balance finances, while closely monitoring international market fluctuations and Vietnam's export policies in the third quarter to have appropriate sales strategies.
The American Spice Trade Association (ASTA) recently warned of the possibility of a spike in global pepper prices due to a shortage of supply, combined with new US tariff policies, expected to take effect from July 9. In particular, the 46% tax rate applied to black pepper from Vietnam is causing concern among exporters and importers.
“A major cause of the global shortage is the dramatic decline in black pepper production in Vietnam, the world’s leading pepper exporter,” Laura Shumow, executive director of ASTA, told EatingWell. “After the price crash in 2018 due to oversupply, many Vietnamese farmers switched to other crops. Because pepper plants take a long time to produce fruit, the impact of this shift is now becoming apparent.”
While Indonesia, India and Brazil are also major pepper producers, changes in Vietnam’s cultivation have a major impact on the global supply chain. “Black pepper prices are cyclical – production drops when prices are low and increases when prices are high,” Shumow noted.
According to recent reports from ASTA, pepper production in Vietnam and some other major exporting countries has remained low for the past few years. It is expected that it will take a few more years for supply to recover and meet market demand.
In addition, factors such as climate change, rising transportation costs, and geopolitical policies are also contributing to the pressure on global pepper prices. ASTA forecasts that supplies are unlikely to recover quickly, especially due to crop conversion by farmers in Vietnam, a country that occupies an important position in the world pepper market.
