With the admission method using high school graduation exam results, depending on the industry, the standard score may be slightly reduced.
Benchmarks may drop
According to the plan, on July 16, the Ministry of Education and Training is expected to announce the results of the High School Graduation Exam. From July 16 to 5:00 p.m. on July 28, candidates can register their university and college admission wishes online on the Ministry of Education and Training's General Admission Support System.
After completing the exams, many people reported that the Math and English exams were difficult, which could affect the university entrance exam results in the future. Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Dao Tung - Director of the Academy of Finance predicted that this year, the average high school graduation score of candidates will be lower than in previous years. Therefore, the admission work at highereducation institutions based on the high school graduation exam results will have a lower standard score.
The admission scores of top universities may decrease by 3-5 points. Many schools will have low admission scores, while mid-ranked schools are expected to see their admission scores decrease by 3-4 points. As for the Academy of Finance, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Dao Tung predicts that the admission score range may be from 22-28 points, not as concentrated as in 2024 (from 26.03-26.85 on a 30-point scale and 34.35-36.15 on a 40-point scale).
Thus, the benchmark scores for some training majors of the Academy of Finance may decrease by 3-4 points compared to last year. A wide range of scores will be an opportunity for candidates to confidently register for the right major to increase their chances of being admitted to the Academy.
“Some newly opened training majors of the Academy are expected to have high benchmark scores, because these are majors that are very attractive to candidates and have a great social demand for high-quality human resources,” Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Dao Tung commented.
Believing that this year's exam closely follows the direction of the Ministry of Education and Training, Ms. Nguyen Thi Xuan Dung - Director of the Communication Center, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH) acknowledged that instead of simply memorizing formulas, the exam requires the application of knowledge, synthesis skills and practical thinking and is more difficult than in 2024.
With this year's exam, the average score in each subject can be concentrated from 6 to 7 points. Traditional combinations such as: A00, B00, D01 tend to be strongly differentiated, commonly fluctuating from 18 to 22 points, while the number of candidates achieving 25 points or more is not much.
"This is a score range that is suitable for the graduation assessment goal, and at the same time can keep this year's university admission scores the same or slightly decrease in some majors," said Ms. Nguyen Thi Xuan Dung, predicting that the admission score based on the 2025 high school exam score method for Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology could range from 16 to 21 points depending on the major.
Among them, the majors that attract many candidates to register such as: Information Technology, Multimedia Communications, Graphic Design, Public Relations, Marketing, Digital Marketing, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Automotive Engineering Technology, English Language... are still highly competitive, with expected benchmark scores ranging from 18 to 20 points.

Arrange your wishes properly
According to experts, 2025 is the first year that 12th graders will take the high school graduation exam according to the 2018 General Education Program. Therefore, the admission scores for universities will set a new and unpredictable level, because there are many influencing factors. Mr. Vu Khac Ngoc - education expert of HOCMAI Education System analyzed that admission based on high school graduation exam scores is not the only option, but schools have a variety of admission methods.
This year, there are also many new factors that can affect the general benchmark score such as: Eliminating early admission or schools having to convert equivalent admission scores, entrance thresholds between admission methods, and admission combinations for a training major/group of majors.
“There are many other factors involved, so predicting how the difficulty of the high school graduation exam in Math or English will affect the benchmark score is not simple,” said Mr. Vu Khac Ngoc.
In fact, every year, there is still a situation where the exam questions of one subject are assessed as easier or more difficult than those of another subject. Meanwhile, most universities still consider high school graduation exam scores in the direction of using many combinations for one major. In addition, some candidates take the English exam but they already have an international English certificate IELTS and can convert the exam scores from these certificates in a more beneficial way.
Many candidates who took the 2025 high school graduation exam scored 8 - 8.5 points in English, but Mr. Vu Khac Ngoc noticed that some candidates already had IELTS 7.0, 7.5. When converted according to the formula prescribed by the schools, most of them scored 10 points. Thus, they will be considered by IELTS score instead of graduation exam score. In these cases, the English test of the 2025 high school graduation exam, even though difficult, will not have much impact on the standard score.
Although it is not possible to predict exactly how the above new factors will affect this year's benchmark scores, Mr. Vu Khac Ngoc said that the general level is: The benchmark scores may be 1-2 points lower than last year (depending on the industry).
However, you should not worry too much, because you can register an unlimited number of wishes and there is no distinction in the order of wishes. If you have a reasonable strategy for arranging your wishes, you can rest assured about the opportunity to be admitted to your favorite universities.
In response to concerns that the more difficult exam questions of some subjects will affect the university entrance exam results of candidates, Mr. Nguyen Anh Dung - Deputy Director of the Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training) said that, up to this point, the comments on the exam questions are based on the initial assessment of candidates, teachers and experts. To have a more accurate assessment, it is necessary to base on the results after marking the exam.
In response to some opinions raising the issue of whether higher education institutions can be adjusted if there is an unusual score distribution, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Anh Dung affirmed that regarding university admissions, the Ministry of Education and Training has issued regulations. Therefore, all implementation work must ensure compliance with the issued university admission regulations and university regulations and guidelines.
Mr. Vo Thanh Hai - Vice President of Duy Tan University (Da Nang City) advised candidates to divide their wishes into 3 groups: Group 1 includes the majors and schools they love, but the entrance scores of previous years were higher than their exam scores.
Group 2: Majors and schools that I like and whose admission scores last year were equal to my exam scores. Group 3: Majors and schools that I like and whose admission scores last year were lower than my exam scores.
