In Ho Chi Minh City, there are currently two formal schools that train stage actors: the Ho Chi Minh City University of Theater and Cinema and the Ho Chi Minh City College of Culture and Arts. Of course, college and university students must have graduated from high school, according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training. This becomes a difficult "problem" when art is a special field, with differences compared to other fields.
It is a fact that many people have artistic qualities and talents, especially in traditional singing and reformed opera, but are not good at high school, especially in math, physics, chemistry, biology, etc. Others have difficult family circumstances and have dropped out of school. Meanwhile, if given the opportunity to practice and receive specialized training, these talents will develop into professional and solid ones.
Director - Meritorious Artist Le Nguyen Dat, Chairman of the Council of the Ho Chi Minh City University of Theater and Cinema, shared: "In my hand I am holding 8 files of 8 young singers who sing Cai Luong very well but do not have a high school diploma, now I do not know how to help them. It would be a pity to abandon them. If only we had other training systems for them to study, to become the successors of Cai Luong. If we do not retain these budding talents, they will struggle to make a living in other jobs, and their talent will be lost forever."
Master Nguyen Duc Thanh, lecturer at the University of Theater and Cinema in Ho Chi Minh City, commented: "In my opinion, the art industry should focus on specialized training, at intermediate level. After that, those who want to study at a higher level and in more depth will continue to study at a higher level. Of course, the number of people who want to study like that is not much, and the quality is small. With the current training, many people have university degrees but their acting is poor, and those with artistic talent are not allowed to study."
Meritorious Artist Huu Chau said: "When I was studying, the school was called Stage Arts School 2, recruiting from grade 9, we entered to study specialized subjects and learned a few more general subjects such as literature, history, geography, that was enough. After 4 years of studying, we graduated with a high school diploma and an intermediate acting diploma, very convenient. And being trained from 14, 15 years old, the body was still flexible, the mind was still clear, so it was very high quality. At that time, recruiting from Binh Tri Thien to Ca Mau , thousands of candidates but only accepting 20 students, enough to know how serious it was, not that an intermediate diploma was easy".
Meritorious Artist Le Tu, a talented artist who has taught many generations of young actors, said: "Currently, there is no vocational school for these children, so where will their talents go? Some go to artist training centers, which is okay, but of course the centers will be less systematic than vocational schools. I think the Ministry of Education and Training should be flexible so that colleges and theaters can have more open courses so that talent is not lost."
The concerns of artists working in the training field, in general, are that art is an industry with its own characteristics, requiring its own appropriate design. Intermediate level training for stage actors is also very necessary.Education innovation is the way to retain and develop talents.
