Revolving around the true story of the People's Armed Forces Hero Nguyen Thi Loi, "Thunder at Lach Hoi Gate" focuses on the events that took place at the end of 1947, with the main goal of destroying the Amyot D'Inville flagship anchored at Lach Hoi estuary, Sam Son. Avoiding the historical narrative or dogmatic illustration, the play chooses to highlight the emotional state of the main character, from which to build the drama's flow.
Using the stage space of two layers of time - between reality and memory, between duty and family, between resistance and life, the audience can understand the situation of Ms. Nguyen Thi Loi - a girl from Chau Doc ( An Giang ), married a Northerner, gave birth to 4 children, of which, 1 child died of illness, one died in her arms from bombs. To avenge her family and the country, she volunteered to "play" the role of the wife of the Minister of State, carrying a bomb to explode a warship, accepting sacrifice. Along with the performance of the actors, sound, light and images highlighted the psychological struggle of a mother - a soldier. Details such as the blurry figure of Nguyen Thi Loi with the wreath floating on the waves, or the silence of her comrades when receiving the suicide note of the character accepting sacrifice... are poetic moments, making the play sink deep into the hearts of the audience. Not only is it the thunder from Lach Hoi estuary, it is the thunder that awakens national pride in each person, it is the honor of the people's police officers who always forget themselves for the country, forget themselves for the people.
Under the skillful hands of director, People's Artist Trieu Trung Kien, writer Nguyen Toan Thang, author Vu Trong Hai, and artists from Lam Son Art Theater, the play captivated the audience from the moment the stage opened until the applause rang out.
In the role of Nguyen Thi Loi, actress Pham Thi Ngoc demonstrated her stage presence in both her refined vọng cổ singing technique and her profound inner acting.
Along with 4 other plays, “Thunder at Lach Hoi Gate” was awarded the Gold Medal by the organizers. In addition, individual awards also honored 6 artists of Lam Son Art Theater. Specifically, the Gold Medal was awarded to People's Artist Vuong Hai (as Hoang Dao - Head of the A13 intelligence team), Pham Thi Ngoc (as Nguyen Thi Loi); the Silver Medal was awarded to Truong Van Phong (as Ca Loc - Nguyen Thi Loi's husband), Nhat Hoa (as French Major - Petit) and the Bronze Medal was awarded to 2 artists Quoc Dung and Tien Luc.
People's Artist Vuong Hai (second from left) plays Hoang Dao - Head of intelligence team A13.
Each play participating in the festival is a slice of life, a touching and authentic story, reflecting the role, responsibility and silent sacrifice of the police force throughout the history of building and defending the country. “Thunder at Lach Hoi Gate” has done that by telling a story of the past with sincere, emotional and profound artistic language.
