Enhancing OCOP products in mountainous communes

Lanh Ngoc Commune was established from three mountainous communes Tien Hiep, Tien Ngoc and Tien Lanh of Tien Phuoc District, Quang Nam Province (old). This place has many typical agricultural products that can build OCOP products. The locality is focusing on promoting the strengths and creativity of the people to improve OCOP products.

From a part-time official of Tien Ngoc commune (formerly), Ms. Pham Thi My Nuong never expected that one day she would become the leader of a production and processing model for locally available agricultural products such as dwarf bananas, white turmeric, ginger, jackfruit..., bringing livelihoods to dozens of households.

Ms. Nuong shared that in 2019, she realized that white turmeric starch - a traditional product of her hometown - has many benefits for health and beauty. From then on, she began to research, learn and invest in machinery to produce white turmeric starch.

By 2021, realizing the potential and value of other agricultural products such as green bananas, ginger, turmeric, etc., Ms. Nuong decided to expand the production scale and establish the QNa Farm Production, Trade and Service Cooperative.

Currently, the cooperative has 3 products recognized as OCOP at the provincial level, including 3-star white turmeric starch, 4-star white turmeric pills, 3-star green banana powder, and 3-star ginger jam pills at the district level.

Revenue from the cooperative's products reaches nearly 2 billion VND/year, creating regular jobs for 10-12 local workers with an income of 6-10 million VND/person/month and about 20 seasonal workers during peak periods.

In addition, the cooperative also supports seeds, cultivation techniques and output products, helping farmers feel secure in production with a linked area of ​​nearly 50 hectares.

Based on favorable natural conditions and a fairly abundant rural labor force, Lanh Ngoc commune has identified great potential for developing diverse agricultural products under the One Commune One Product (OCOP) Program.

Up to now, the commune has 9 OCOP products with 2 to 4 stars, mainly focusing on agricultural products, food, medicinal herbs and beverages. The locality is continuing to prepare documents to request superiors to evaluate and recognize 4 OCOP products for local entities.

Mr. Nguyen Minh Xinh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Lanh Ngoc Commune, said that the 1st Congress of the Lanh Ngoc Commune Party Committee (term 2025 - 2030) identified garden - forest economy as a strength for local economic development. The commune continues to promote support for collective economic development, production according to linked value chains, with at least 3 OCOP products associated with the development of product consumption markets by 2030.

“The OCOP program in the commune is gradually affirming its value and quality in the market, and is highly appreciated by consumers. In the process of building OCOP products, people have also gradually changed their production and business mindset from passive and dependent to active and creative, creating great changes in commercial value,” said Mr. Xinh.
