"Double" effectiveness in early cancer detection

On July 8, Can Tho Central General Hospital inaugurated the endoscopy department and deployed the ultrasound endoscopy technique, the first technique deployed in the West. The ultrasound endoscopy technique is known as the combination of endoscopy and ultrasound, using an endoscope attached to an ultrasound probe to deeply explore lesions. This method brings outstanding value in diagnosing and intervening in diseases of the digestive tract, bile, pancreas, as well as mucosal and extra-mucosal lesions of the digestive tract; especially detecting cancer at a very early stage.

In particular, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is superior to traditional imaging methods such as computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) thanks to its ability to aspirate and fine needle biopsy (FNA/FNB) under ultrasound guidance. This allows for accurate assessment of the tumor's relationship with neighboring lymph nodes and the extent of invasion into surrounding organs. Thanks to that, EUS plays an extremely important role in detecting cancer at a very early stage - a key factor in improving treatment effectiveness and detecting tumors deep in the abdomen with minimal invasion.

For the first time deployed in the West, the Endoscopy Department, Can Tho Central General Hospital performed ultrasound endoscopy for 2 patients. In which, the female patient VNH (63 years old, in Vinh Long ) was diagnosed with a malignant tumor of the ampulla of Vater. EUS technique helps to accurately assess the location and size of the tumor, thereby orienting the chemotherapy regimen and optimal treatment plan for the patient.

Expanding cooperation, improving professional capacity

According to Can Tho Central General Hospital, the Endoscopy Department of Can Tho Central General Hospital currently performs an average of 150 to 170 multidisciplinary endoscopies per day. Therefore, the expansion of this specialty is an urgent requirement. created, the expanded Endoscopy Department has an area of 485 m², including 8 modernly equipped endoscopy rooms, including 6 digestive endoscopy rooms, 1 urology endoscopy room and 1 respiratory endoscopy room.

With the orientation of in-depth and complete development, in the coming time, the hospital will continue to invest in 2 more digestive endoscopy systems, 1 small intestine endoscopy system to deploy synchronously and comprehensively digestive endoscopy techniques, meeting the needs of medical examination and treatment for people.

At the event, Can Tho Central General Hospital and Fujifilm Vietnam Co., Ltd. signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in training in gastrointestinal endoscopy for the period 2025 - 2027. The two sides will coordinate to organize training courses and specialized seminars on modern endoscopy, focusing on techniques such as: Diagnosis and treatment of early gastrointestinal cancer, updating new techniques on image-enhanced endoscopy and magnification endoscopy, endoscopic mucosal resection technique - EMR, interventional endoscopy technique - EUS ultrasound endoscopy and ERCP retrograde hepatobiliary pancreatoscopy...

In order to support Can Tho Central General Hospital in deploying new techniques, Fujifilm Vietnam donated a Japanese-made ultrasound endoscopy processing system. At the same time, ETC Medical Equipment Co., Ltd. also sponsored 12 multi-function endoscopy beds. The total sponsorship value is about 3 billion VND.
