In recent times, the forestry sector and forest rangers in the province have made great efforts to carry out many tasks and synchronous solutions to stabilize the organizational structure and organize forest protection activities smoothly and effectively.
The results of efforts to preserve the forest
On May 8, 2025, we followed the provincial delegation led by Vice Chairwoman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Thi Hoang to inspect forest management and protection work at Cat Tien National Park. The delegation spent a lot of time in the field to grasp the situation; at the same time, visited and encouraged the rangers and forest protection staff who regularly patrolled the deep forest stations.
On the way, we easily encountered many wild animals (deer, buffalo, squirrels, etc.) looking for food in the grasslands, around the vast forest with many valuable large trees. To have such forest resources, forest management and protection work must be implemented strictly and effectively.
Director of Cat Tien National Park Pham Xuan Thinh said that Cat Tien National Park is currently assigned to manage over 71 thousand hectares, located in the territory of 3 old provinces: Dong Nai, Binh Phuoc and Lam Dong (now 2 new provinces: Dong Nai and Lam Dong). Cat Tien forest is one of the most important special-use forests in Vietnam and plays an important role in environmental issues such as: ensuring the function of regulating water in the upper Dong Nai river, providing fresh water in the dry season and controlling flooding in the rainy season for the downstream area. Currently, Cat Tien National Park is one of the units that does a good job of protecting the forest and is highly appreciated by the Central and provincial leaders.
When mentioning the achievements in forest protection in recent times, Head of Dong Nai Forest Protection Department Ngo Van Vinh said that in 1997, the People's Committee of Dong Nai province (old) issued a decision to close all types of natural forests in the province to restore, protect, develop natural forests and maintain biodiversity. Dong Nai became the earliest locality in the country to close forests at that time.
As soon as the forest closure policy was issued, the forestry sector and Dong Nai forest rangers made efforts to implement many plans and solutions for forest management, protection and development, such as: increasing patrols, raids, and preventing illegal forest intrusion; promoting legal propaganda to raise people's awareness; implementing forest planting and care for native large timber forests, nurturing natural forests; making efforts to protect rare species of animals and plants... Dong Nai's forests have grown increasingly and the value of forest resources has gradually increased.
Head of the Forest Protection Department of Dong Nai Nature and Culture Reserve TRAN DINH HUNG said that in recent times, the unit has proactively implemented the coordination regulations between agencies and forest owners in the border areas, so the forest management work has brought about many positive changes. In particular, after the merger of Dong Nai and Binh Phuoc provinces, the unit's forest management work has become more convenient and effective.
Continue to coordinate well to keep the forest green forever
Before the province's merger, Binh Phuoc province (old) had a total area of forest and non-forest land of about 171 thousand hectares; of which, natural forest was about 55.6 thousand hectares, planted forest was nearly 99 thousand hectares, the rest was non-forest land.
In recent times, thanks to the attention, direction, coordination and timely support of all levels and sectors from the central to local levels, the forestry sector of Binh Phuoc province (old) has achieved many positive results. The area of natural forests is managed, protected, developed and used sustainably. Forestry violations are detected, prevented and handled promptly, strictly and in accordance with legal regulations, creating a high level of education and deterrence. Timely attention is paid to the planting and care of planted forests. For example, in 2024, Binh Phuoc province (old) planted 40.39 hectares of large timber production forests from support funds; continued to care for nearly 170 hectares of semi-flooded and production forests...
Mr. Ngo Van Vinh said that after merging with Binh Phuoc province (old), Dong Nai province (new) has a total forest and forestry land area of 313.7 thousand hectares; of which, special-use forests account for 39.41%, protective forests account for 23.14%, and production forests account for 37.45%. The entire forest and forestry land area is located on the boundaries of 48/95 newly established communes and wards and is assigned to 14 forest owners for management.
The large management area makes the work of forest management always hidden with complex difficulties. However, Dong Nai Forest Protection Department has made efforts to implement a number of key tasks so that the work of reorganizing the apparatus and organizing the activities of the department is not interrupted and does not affect the tasks. Specifically, the new Dong Nai Forest Protection Department was established on the basis of merging the old Dong Nai Forest Protection Department and the old Binh Phuoc Forest Protection Department. The new organizational structure includes: 1 head of the department, 4 deputy heads of the department with 4 professional departments (Administration, Forest Protection, Forest Development, Nature Conservation and Biodiversity), 2 mobile forest protection teams and 10 regional forest protection stations. The personnel plan of the affiliated unit includes 17 job positions with a total of 182 civil servants and employees.

Based on the 2-level local government, 2 mobile forest ranger teams and 10 regional forest ranger stations are assigned management areas according to commune-level administrative boundaries, ensuring the establishment criteria for forest area and forestry land. This ensures reasonable division of personnel, suitable for tasks, increases transparency and efficiency, and closely follows the management area...
After the merger, Dong Nai Forest Protection Department continues to coordinate to review and complete the draft investment policy, support investment in forest protection and development, and adjust and supplement policies for forest protection forces to submit to the Provincial People's Council. Continue to base on approved programs, projects, plans and schemes to deploy forest protection patrol activities, handle violations according to legal regulations. Proactively advise local authorities to strengthen forest fire fighting command boards, rapid response teams and groups to limit conflicts between elephants and humans. Implement regulations on forest protection coordination between forest rangers and relevant agencies, local authorities and forest owners.
In addition, Dong Nai Forest Protection Department focuses on implementing the targets of afforestation and tree planting when the weather is favorable, ensuring the completion of targets, the volume of trees planted has a survival rate of over 85%; supporting enterprises producing and trading wood and forest products...
