Implementing solutions
Can Tho City has a total agricultural land area of over 114,168 hectares; of which, the rice growing area is about 76,000 hectares, the fruit growing area is over 26,000 hectares... Plant protection drugs are important materials in agricultural production, helping plants grow and develop stably. However, if used pesticide packaging is not collected and treated effectively, it will also cause great impacts on environmental quality. In recent times, Can Tho City has stepped up the implementation of solutions to collect pesticide packaging, aiming to protect the natural environment safely and sustainably.
Accordingly, the functional sectors and mass organizations coordinate with localities to strengthen propaganda work, instruct farmers to collect used pesticide packaging. Build effective models such as pesticide waste bins, pesticide waste pits... Communes propagate and mobilize people to collect used pesticide packaging and store it in jars, jars with lids or other safe containers of households. At the same time, coordinate with relevant units to collect pesticide packaging twice a year. The Department of Agriculture, local authorities and farmers in many agricultural cooperatives also regularly organize campaigns to collect pesticide bottles and packaging to collect thoroughly... According to statistics from the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City, in 2024, nearly 20 tons of pesticide packaging were collected in the city and treated according to regulations.
Mr. Tran Thai Nghiem, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City, said: Although Can Tho is a city directly under the Central Government, agricultural production is still an important economic sector, creating jobs and livelihoods for a part of farmers. In recent times, the production level of people has been increasingly improved, the level of intensive farming is increasingly high, so the use of materials for production is increasing. Community awareness in collecting waste, including waste in agricultural production, is increasingly raised. However, to collect and treat used pesticide packaging effectively requires the joint efforts and perseverance of all agencies, businesses and farmers. The Department recommends that Party committees at all levels, authorities, and socio-political organizations continue to promote extensive propaganda in many forms to the masses about the purpose, meaning, comprehensive and long-term benefits of collecting used pesticide bottles and packaging. Mobilize all classes of people to participate in response to contribute to building Can Tho City to be more ecological, civilized, and modern...
Join hands to protect the environment
The program "Clean Environment - Green Life" took place in early June 2025 in Can Tho, with the cooperation of local authorities, Syngenta Vietnam team and farmers, contributing to creating positive impressions for the community and the environment. Accordingly, 6.3 tons of pesticide packaging were collected and safely processed according to the procedures of the global Syngenta Group. The number of collected pesticide packaging was converted into 1,100 trees including 650 Lagerstroemia trees and 600 pink butterfly trees that were planted along rural roads in Can Tho city, creating long-term shade and improving the living environment. After many years of implementation in Can Tho, the program has collected more than 69 tons of pesticide packaging and planted 3,350 trees, contributing to beautifying the appearance of the countryside.
Participating in exchanging pesticide packaging, Mr. Luu Van Dinh, Thanh Phu commune, Co Do district, shared: "Thanks to the program, I have now formed the habit of collecting packaging immediately after use. Collecting it like this not only protects the environment, protects the health of my family, but also allows me to exchange it for gifts on occasions like today. I also often remind people around me to follow the program's instructions"...
Not only stopping at collecting packaging and planting trees, the program also focuses on training to raise awareness of farmers about the safe, effective and responsible use of pesticides. Syngenta Vietnam has organized training sessions to help farmers grasp the principles of "4 rights", "5 golden rules" in using pesticides, how to equip standard labor protection equipment and methods of collecting, classifying and destroying used pesticide packaging. Thereby, not only helping farmers grasp knowledge but also contributing to changing awareness of responsibility for environmental protection; at the same time, improving the effectiveness of pest management and ensuring health for themselves, their families and the community.
