- In recent days, many families in Lang Son were shocked to receive electricity bills for June 2025 that skyrocketed, even doubling the previous month. The main reason is the use of refrigeration equipment and other energy-consuming devices in the extremely hot weather.
According to statistics from Lang Son Electricity Company, the average electricity consumption of households in the province in June 2025 increased by 20-30%, even more than 40% for some households due to hot weather and high usage.
Surprised to receive electricity bill
Mr. Pham Duc Cong (in Ro Phai area, Mai Pha commune in the past, now Dong Kinh ward) was startled when he saw the announcement from the electricity industry that the amount of electricity bill his family had to pay in June 2025 was more than 6.3 million VND, an increase of about 1.8 million VND compared to the electricity bill in May 2025.
Mr. Cong shared that the electricity bill for May 2025 that his family had to pay was more than 4,554,093 VND. Although the amount was already high, when he received the electricity bill for June 2025, it was more than 6.3 million VND, which really shocked him.
Seeing the large difference in electricity bills between the two months, Mr. Cong sent a petition to the Lang Son Electricity Management Team (formerly Lang Son City Electricity). Through the inspection of electricity officials in front of his family, the reason for the high electricity output in June 2025 of Mr. Cong's family was because when the weather was hot, the family used many refrigeration appliances such as air conditioners, air coolers, etc.
In addition to Mr. Cong's family, according to information from the Business Department of Lang Son Electricity Company, immediately after receiving information about the electricity index and the amount to be paid in June 2025, about 40 customers petitioned the regional electricity management teams and requested to review the electricity index and electricity bill. All families petitioned when they saw that the electricity bill in June 2025 increased by 1/3 or doubled compared to May 2025. Many families were surprised by the amount of electricity they had to pay, up to several million VND.
Discussing the sudden increase in electricity consumption of many families in June 2025, Mr. Luu Dang Hung, an officer of the Electricity Management Team of Xu Lang area, said: Through actual inspection according to the recommendations of some customers in the wards, we found that the increase in electricity bills in June 2025 was due to the families using many electric heating devices for a long time, leading to a high increase in electricity consumption.
A typical example is Mr. Pham Duc Cong's family. Through actual inspection, it was found that the family had installed 4 air conditioners. In June 2025, the family regularly used 3 air conditioners for a long time. In addition, the family also used many high-energy consuming electrical appliances such as refrigerators, kettles, rice cookers, water pumps, etc. And in fact, in just the first 3 days of July 2025, Mr. Cong's family's electricity consumption was 195 kWh.
According to the staff of the regional electricity management teams when they came to check and guide customers on electricity usage, the main reason for the high electricity output in June 2025 of families was that when the weather was hot, families used many refrigeration appliances such as air conditioners, air coolers and some other large electricity consuming devices.
According to calculations by the electricity industry, a 12,000 btu air conditioner will consume 1.2 kWh of electricity per hour of operation; a water heater turned on for 1 hour consumes 2.5 kWh; a rice cooker turned on for 1 hour consumes more than 1 kWh; a desktop computer turned on for 1 day will consume 5 kWh... If families use household appliances for a long time, the amount of electricity consumed in 1 day can be from 30 - 80 kWh.
Promote electricity saving
Harsh weather combined with unreasonable electricity usage habits caused many families to pay several million VND in electricity bills in June 2025. According to statistics from Lang Son Electricity Company, the average electricity consumption of families in the province in June 2025 increased by 20-30%, even more than 40% for some families due to hot weather and high usage.
According to the forecast from the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, July 2025 will continue to record many prolonged heat waves, with outdoor temperatures reaching over 40°C at times. To minimize the situation of high electricity bills during peak heat periods, Lang Son Electricity Company has focused on implementing many synchronous solutions.
In particular, the first thing the leaders of Lang Son Electricity Company have directed power units to strengthen the inspection of meter readings for customers with a sudden increase in electricity output compared to the previous month; update, monitor and answer all customer questions about electricity bills, and at the same time inform customers to recognize the causes and reality of the increase in electricity bills in order to have reasonable and scientific regulation, in order to limit the situation of high electricity bills in the following month.
In parallel, Lang Son electricity staff also guide customers to recognize and use devices with high power consumption, and how to use electricity most effectively and economically.
Mr. Tran Van Dang, Deputy Head of the Electricity Management Team of Xu Lang area, said: The best way to reduce electricity consumption is for customers to use electricity properly, economically and effectively. And there is no other way but for customers to proactively balance the use of electrical appliances in the home at the same time. Specifically, customers should turn off unnecessary electrical appliances, as well as limit the use of appliances that consume a lot of electricity such as: air conditioners, refrigerators, water heaters, electric irons, washing machines, etc. At the same time, customers should buy and use electrical appliances with energy-saving labels; choose and apply rooftop solar power to save electricity.
Ms. Ly Thanh Huyen, Deputy Head of Business Department, Lang Son Electricity Company said that not only guiding customers to use electricity economically and effectively, during this time, to ensure transparency, Lang Son Electricity Company also used an application to monitor daily electricity consumption so that customers can look up and record their family's index on the customer care channel (address: cskh.evnlangson.com.vn).
Through this application, customers can use their smart mobile phones to monitor their family's electricity consumption to proactively adjust electricity usage in the most economical and efficient way.
In fact, from May 10, 2025, Vietnam Electricity Group has adjusted the average retail electricity price to increase by 4.8%, equivalent to the new price at level 1 (the lowest level) of 1,984 VND/kWh (price excluding VAT). The increase in electricity at this level is not large, but according to the regulations on calculating electricity bills according to the ladder price, customers with electricity consumption below 50 kWh will be charged at 1,984 VND/kWh, and at levels below 100 kWh, the electricity price will be charged at 2,050 VND/kWh (for kWh from 51 - 100), and if using from 401 kWh or more (level 6), customers will have to pay at 3,460 VND/kWh (for kWh from 401 and up). This means that if customers use electricity economically, their electricity bill will not increase dramatically.
Currently, Lang Son Electricity Company is providing electricity customers in the province with equipment, tools and solutions so that customers can monitor and adjust their family's electricity consumption, thereby helping to adjust their own family's electricity consumption. Thereby, there will not be a surprise like when receiving the electricity bill for June 2025.
Lang Son Electricity Company informs: For transparency, customers using electricity in the area can propose to conduct an inspection of the electricity meter in use. Electricity staff will assist in removing the meter with the witness of a family representative to take the meter to be inspected at Lang Son Electricity Testing Center or at the inspection unit under the Department of Science and Technology. |
