Coconut trees "have a relationship" with Ia Dom land

(GLO)- After many years of searching for a living everywhere, Mr. Duong Van Thiet (born in 1976, Cua Khau village, Ia Dom commune, Gia Lai province) chose the border area as a destination for his small family. Not only developing livestock, he boldly started a business with Siamese coconut trees - a new variety that promises to bring a stable income.

Mr. Thiet was born in Thanh Hoa province. At the age of 20, he joined the army. After being discharged from the army, he decided to choose Binh Phuoc province as a place to settle down and start a career.

After many years of searching for a way to make a living, Mr. Thiet decided to choose goat farming. Once when he went to the border area of Duc Co district (old), he realized that there were many opportunities to raise goats in the context of increasingly narrow land in Binh Phuoc. In 2019, he decided to buy a plot of land of about 10 hectares here to make a farm to raise nearly 100 goats. The land area is large, raising goats does not take too much time because of natural grazing, so he planted more trees to improve his life.

During his time living in the South, Mr. Thiet visited and learned coconut growing techniques from the locals many times. Realizing that the soil of the new land could be suitable for coconut trees, in 2021, he boldly bought more than 300 seedlings of Malaysian red coconut and dwarf green coconut to plant on an area of 1 hectare. After 4 years, the coconut trees grew well and produced large, beautiful bunches of fruit.

Mr. Thiet said: “I also did not expect coconut trees to be so suitable for this land. The soil quality, water source and climate are all favorable. About 22 months after planting, the coconut trees began to produce the first bunches of fruit. About 5-6 months later, they can be harvested. In particular, coconut trees grown in this area produce very sweet water. I have never grown coconut trees before, so I often learn from groups on social networks, and my brothers are very enthusiastic in giving advice.”

During the recent Tet holiday, the coconut garden yielded a harvest of tens of millions of dong. Traders came to buy the fruit at 7-10 thousand dong per fruit.

According to Mr. Thiet, when entering the business period, each coconut tree will produce about 200 fruits/year. With the current selling price, 1 coconut tree will bring in a revenue of 1-2 million VND. It is estimated that the coconut garden can bring him nearly 200 million VND/year after deducting investment costs. Compared to crops such as rubber, cashew, cassava... coconut trees promise to bring in a much higher income.

According to Mr. Thiet: Growing coconuts does not require too much initial cost and is very easy to care for. On the coconut growing area, he also takes advantage of growing grass to both raise goats and keep the soil moist.

His family's land is still quite large, so Mr. Thiet plans to grow more coconuts. He also started to grow his own seeds to reduce initial costs and is willing to share with the people around him.

"Coconut products can all be used, so I think the output will be stable. Especially, the coconut here is quite sweet and is a natural drink, ensuring freshness and cleanliness, meeting the needs of customers," Mr. Thiet shared.

Speaking to reporters, Ms. Dinh Thi Nga - President of the Ia Dom Commune Farmers' Association - said: "We welcome farmers who are bold enough to try new crops to increase the value per unit area. If the model brings in good income, the Commune Farmers' Association will encourage people to replicate it."
