On the afternoon of July 3, at the regular press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , spokesperson Pham Thu Hang received questions from foreign media about the issue of US tariffs on Vietnam.

The representative of the foreign news agency also mentioned information about the expected reciprocal tax rate imposed on Vietnam, which was posted by US President Donald Trump on social media.

Regarding this issue, Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang recalled the phone call between General Secretary To Lam and US President Trump on the evening of July 2. A representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that during the phone call, the two leaders discussed Vietnam-US relations, including reciprocal trade.

"Also during the phone call, General Secretary To Lam highly appreciated President Donald Trump's interest in Vietnam and the relationship between the two countries," said Ms. Hang, then added: "Currently, the Vietnamese and US negotiating teams are coordinating to exchange information to concretize the discussion contents of the two countries' senior leaders."

As Tuoi Tre Online reported earlier, in a phone call on July 2, General Secretary To Lam and President Donald Trump welcomed the two countries' negotiating delegations' agreement on the Vietnam-US Joint Statement on the framework of a reciprocal, fair and balanced trade agreement.

Mr. Trump appreciated Vietnam's commitment to providing preferential market access for US goods, including large-engine cars.

He affirmed that the US will significantly reduce reciprocal taxes on many Vietnamese export goods and will continue to cooperate with Vietnam in resolving difficulties affecting bilateral trade relations, especially in areas that both sides prioritize.

General Secretary To Lam proposed that the US soon recognize Vietnam as a market economy and remove export restrictions on some high-tech products.

The two leaders also discussed a number of major directions and measures to promote the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in the coming years.

The two sides also agreed to increase delegation exchanges and contacts at high and all levels, and promote cooperation in the fields of economics, trade and investment, especially in key and breakthrough areas such as science and high technology.

On this occasion, General Secretary To Lam reiterated his invitation to President Donald Trump and his wife to visit Vietnam and expressed his wish to meet President Trump again in the near future.

President Trump respectfully thanked the General Secretary for his invitation and expressed his wish to meet him again soon.

Writing on the social network Truth Social the same day, President Trump announced that he had a phone call with General Secretary To Lam.

"I am honored to announce that I have just reached an agreement with the Socialist Republic of Vietnam after speaking with To Lam, the highly respected General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam. This is a great cooperation agreement between our two countries," Trump wrote.
