In the early morning of July 4, the round of 32 of the Porto Billiards World Cup ended. Of the 6 Vietnamese players participating in this round, only 1 person won a ticket to the next round. It is worth mentioning that although group D had two strong players, Tran Quyet Chien and Bao Phuong Vinh, they both stopped early.
In the opening match, Bao Phuong Vinh defeated his compatriot for the third time in a row. However, he then lost to Nikos Polychro (Greece) and Peter Ceulemans (Belgium).
After losing to Phuong Vinh, Tran Quyet Chien defeated Ceulemans, but lost to Polychro in the decisive match. The Greek player topped Group D with all wins. The remaining 3 players had 1 win and 2 losses. However, Ceulemans finished second in the group thanks to a better scoring coefficient. Quyet Chien and Phuong Vinh had to leave after only the first round.
In Group E, the new champion of the Bogota (Colombia) Billiards World Cup earlier this year, Tran Thanh Luc, also disappointed. He finished the round of 32 with all losses and finished last in the group. Chiem Hong Thai also stopped in Group C with the third place overall.
Only group B remains, where two players have passed the qualifying round: Dao Van Ly and Thon Viet Hoang Minh. Initially, there was little hope for both of them as this group had strong opponents. But then the surprise happened. In the opening match, Dao Van Ly defeated his compatriot Hoang Minh.
In the second round, Dao Van Ly caused another shock when he defeated former world number 1 and current world champion Cho Myung Woo. In the final round, he continued to beat Rui Manuel Costa to top the table.
Hoang Minh, despite his best efforts, only finished 3rd in this group. Thus, Dao Van Ly is the only name representing Vietnam to participate in the round of 16. His opponent will be Spanish player Sergio Jimenez.
