At the international singing contest Sing! Asia , singer Phuong My Chi left a strong impression on the Chinese audience not only because of her rustic, folk-style voice but also because of her meticulous investment in costumes, skillfully conveying Vietnamese cultural identity.
The Gen Z singer's journey is also recognized through millions of views and leading trends on YouTube, proving her cross-border appeal.
Immediately after the rounds, Phuong My Chi’s performances quickly went viral on YouTube. Her final video reached over 5 million views in just 48 hours, becoming the top trending in Vietnam and entering the top 10 in China.
Phuong My Chi has collaborated with young Vietnamese designers to create outfits that are not only beautiful but also imbued with national identity, from patterns to natural materials. The three outstanding outfits below have become the center of attention, contributing to the fashion "fever" at Sing! Asia.
The first outfit that made a strong impression was the lotus embroidered ao dai, worn by Phuong My Chi in the quarter-final round, singing Bong phu hoa (composed by DTAP).
This is an extremely elaborately designed outfit, inspired by the image of the lotus flower, the symbolic flower in Vietnam. The outfit uses the main colors of pink lotus and green, realistically recreating the beauty of a blooming lotus. The upper body is stylized like a lotus, while the skirt flares out with layers of lotus petals overlapping each other to create an impressive 3D block.
The long skirt tail creates a graceful and luxurious look. The combination of silk, chiffon and delicate fringe details highlights the noble and pure beauty of the lotus flower. This outfit is considered by fashionistas not only as a performance outfit but also as a work of art, conveying a message about the resilience and beauty of Vietnamese women.
The outfit went viral as soon as it was released, with millions of views on the related YouTube video. Viewers were particularly impressed by the combination of tradition and sophistication, with many commenting on its “beauty like a lotus flower in the water.”
The second set was inspired by the rice drum. This outfit stands out with its flowing shape, using colorful stripes, simulating the image of a rice drum, suitable for Phuong My Chi's performance with the Ly Bac Bo mashup ( Ba Cong Di Cho Troi Mua, Ly Cay Da, Ba Rang Ba Ri, Dan Xe Bo ) composed by DTAP, inspired by the cultural life of the Northern people.
The rice drum is not only a familiar symbol of Vietnam but also represents grace and elegance. The colored bands also evoke silk threads and breezes, creating softness and movement on stage.
The combination with colorful fringes also helps create an impressive visual effect when Phuong My Chi performs. The costume is designed to be eye-catching and cheerful, which is considered suitable for Phuong My Chi's personality.
The third outfit is a sparkling stone-studded ao tu than, used by Phuong My Chi while singing Buon trang (composed by DTAP) and Rock Hat gao .
The sparkling emerald green Ao Tu Than costume is a typical feature of Northern culture. The innovative Ao Tu Than design with a wide flap, combined with elaborate stone and embroidery details, creates a majestic and splendid look.
The bodice has details of a stork, bringing a light and strong Northern style. Phuong My Chi's long braided hair is also a special highlight, adding to the traditional yet modern beauty of the female singer.
Phuong My Chi's three outfits not only helped her shine at Sing! Asia but also served as a bridge to bring Vietnamese fashion to the world . The combination of tradition and modernity in the designs proved that national culture can be expressed creatively, attracting attention from the international community.
