Many of you admit that you are still very confused and do not know what you really want even though you are about to register for admission.

Don't know which major to choose?

Ms. Truong Thi Hanh (living in Vinh Long ) has a daughter who is waiting for the results of the high school graduation exam to apply for university. However, what has worried her for many months is that her daughter refuses to share anything related to choosing a major or choosing a school.

"I have to register my university application soon, but no matter how I ask, my child won't say anything. While many students who haven't even finished their graduation exams have actively registered for admission, my child has not made any move yet...", Ms. Hanh is impatient.

Nguyen Thi Quynh Nhu (in Dak Lak ) still doesn't know what major to choose or which school to attend. This female student admits that she doesn't know which major is suitable for her because up until now she only knew how to study to get high scores, not knowing what her strengths are.

"I have been an excellent student for many years but I don't know which subject I like. Actually, I am good at math and English, but I just got 5.5 on the IELTS test. In fact, I think my academic ability is average, not excellent. Therefore, I don't know which major is suitable for me. I am waiting for my high school graduation exam score to decide which major to apply for," Nhu said.

Meanwhile, male student Tran Ngoc Thang (in Da Nang) was also confused when he realized that he was extroverted, liked to travel and was interested in natural sciences but did not know which major to choose.

"I plan to apply for information technology, mainly because my parents said this industry is developing. But actually I don't like working on computers. Moreover, I didn't do well on my graduation exam in math, so my score probably won't be high... I really don't know what to do," Thang shared.

Self discovery

According to Dr. Pham Tan Ha (University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City National University), because this is the first time the high school graduation exam is held under the new program, the admission regulations also have many new points, so candidates are worried. In previous years, candidates could be admitted early in some methods, so they were more assured, but with the new regulations this year, there is a bit more suspense because there is no more early admission.

"In fact, the changes are mainly related to the technical aspects of the admission process, so for candidates, the chances of admission are not reduced. The important thing is that candidates need to identify their favorite major, review carefully to get the best exam results, and at the same time carefully research the admission information of the schools and register for admission according to the correct procedures to increase the chances of admission to their favorite major and school," Mr. Ha advised.

Regarding choosing a career, Mr. Ha said that in reality, students today find it difficult to determine which career they truly love. Therefore, young people should not worry too much when they reach 18 years old and still do not know what to do or what they like.

"You need to experience, discover yourself, and determine your passion to be able to make better decisions for your future. Find out information about all the industries you know, read a lot about them and try doing a job related to it to see if you like it, what would it be like if you did that job every day... With a love for the job, all difficulties will become easier for you," Mr. Ha affirmed.

Industry Shift

Experts say that the choice of majors by candidates in recent years has been quite pragmatic. They prioritize majors that are easy to find jobs, have high salaries, avoid hard work, and even choose majors based on trends. Many students think that if they want to work in a certain field, they must choose to study that major.

It is worth mentioning that not only students but also many parents think like that, so they often orient and want their children to enter a "hot" industry. However, according to experts, this understanding is incorrect because a career field needs human resources from many different industries.

Associate Professor Dr. Bui Hoang Thang, Head of Training Department of University of Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University), said: "Majors and professions have related and unrelated points. After completing a major, one can do many jobs and one can study many majors to do one job.

Going to college helps us become useful people in society, gain knowledge and practice professional skills of a profession until it is "ripe" so that we can easily change careers later.

According to Mr. Ha, in the current shift of society, occupations also shift a lot and very quickly. Therefore, those who are able to adapt well to this shift will easily succeed. "Currently, many students graduate from technical and economic schools with a second degree at our school and vice versa," Mr. Ha added.

Learn about the industry you are interested in

Master Phung Quan (University of Natural Sciences, Ho Chi Minh City National University) said that if you choose the wrong major, you will be very discouraged and unable to study. Every year, the rate of students dropping out of school is 10-15%, most of which is due to not understanding the major clearly.

"Currently, there are many natural science fields suitable for those who like to travel, such as biology, oceanography, geology, environment...

People with extroverted personalities cannot do in-depth research work in laboratories. Those who like to travel a lot can choose tourism, journalism, marketing...

Every industry has its own flashy exterior and quiet interior. Therefore, you need to research carefully and understand the industry you are interested in to choose the right one," Mr. Quan advised.

Passion and ability

In fact, medicine is one of the majors that attracts the attention of many students with a large number of applications every year. The benchmark scores for general medicine, dentistry, pharmacy... are always among the majors with the highest benchmark scores.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Khoi, head of the training department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, advised: "Choosing a major requires careful consideration between your passion and your ability. You should not be too dreamy, leading to failure in university. If you really love medicine but are not confident in your scores, you can choose to study traditional medicine and preventive medicine to pursue your passion."

Two days of admission selection fair on July 19

After the Ministry of Education and Training announced the 2025 high school graduation exam scores, two days of university and college admission selection will take place simultaneously in Ho Chi Minh City (University of Technology, 268 Ly Thuong Kiet, Dien Hong Ward) and Hanoi (Hanoi University of Technology) on July 19, organized by Tuoi Tre newspaper in coordination with the Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training) with the support of Vingroup Corporation.

The event was attended by experts from the Ministry of Education and Training, universities, and experienced career counselors. All questions from parents and candidates about registering for admission and information related to admission will be thoroughly answered by experts.

It is expected that there will be hundreds of direct consulting booths from universities, colleges, vocational schools and study abroad consulting units with a strong consulting team also present in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to clear up all questions about enrollment for candidates.
