Vietnam News Agency (VNA) has been elected for the fifth consecutive time as a member of the Executive Committee of the Organization of Asia- Pacific News Agencies (OANA) for the 2025-2028 term.
The new Executive Board of OANA has 11 members.
During the 19th OANA General Assembly plenary session in St. Petersburg, TASS news agency was elected President of the organization until 2028.
TASS Director General Andrey Kondrashov has been elected Chairman of OANA. TASS First Deputy Director General Mikhail Gusman has been elected Secretary General of the organization.
The next OANA General Assembly will be hosted by AzerTAc, in Azerbaijan in 2028.
More than one hundred representatives of news agencies from over 30 countries attended the 19th OANA General Assembly, which took place in St. Petersburg (Russian Federation) from June 18-21. This was one of the major activities within the framework of the 28th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).
The VNA delegation led by General Director Vu Viet Trang attended the General Assembly and had many foreign affairs and professional activities at this important event.
Around the main topic "News agencies and the challenges of the modern world ," representatives of government agencies, ministries and departments, heads of federal media, public figures and experts, ambassadors of OANA member states, heads of agencies of regional states accredited to Russia discussed innovations in work and features of editorial policy in modern conditions, combating disinformation and fake news, the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the work of the media.
In a video address to the conference, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov pointed out that the agenda of the OANA General Assembly includes many topical issues, including current issues such as combating counterfeiting and disinformation, as well as the use of AI technology in the media sector.
The Foreign Minister expressed confidence that the OANA General Assembly will contribute to developing a non-political dialogue among the media, strengthening trust and mutual understanding in international issues.
For his part, Russian President's Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov affirmed that OANA is a very important organization of information agencies and media, who are truly "legislators" in the journey of information to the world, accounting for 2/3 of the world's information flow.
The Russian President also expressed his respect for the organization. In his message to the General Assembly, the head of Russia emphasized that today objective and timely information plays an important role in enhancing trust and mutual understanding between countries and peoples.
He believes that OANA member news agencies are working to promote high standards of journalistic integrity and strengthen the regional media community.
The OANA General Assembly focused on current practical issues such as fighting fake news, online risks, developing and using AI..., which directly affect public trust in mass media.
The General Assembly called for improving the quality and accuracy of information and setting high ethical standards in journalism.
The General Assembly listened to many presentations from leaders and representatives of regional news agencies on emerging issues in their countries' press environments, shared experiences, and proposed cooperation initiatives.
During the news agencies' discussion session on professional issues, VNA contributed a presentation on new experiences in the newsroom, emphasizing experiences related to the new and growing trend today of using AI technology and digital transformation.
Within the framework of the General Assembly, a professional exchange of opinions took place with Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, focusing on concerns about new technologies being used to create fake news.
Within the framework of attending the 19th OANA, General Director Vu Viet Trang not only had many activities in the professional field, but also conducted a series of very successful foreign affairs and promotional activities for VNA.
On the sidelines of the General Assembly, General Director Vu Viet Trang also gave interviews to foreign news agencies and discussed with colleagues about management issues in the press sector as well as strengthening international cooperation to improve the quality and effectiveness of information.
On the first day, June 18, General Director Vu Viet Trang interviewed President Vladimir Putin within the framework of the Russian leader's meeting with leaders of 14 foreign news agencies.
President V. Putin affirmed that no matter how the times change, the friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and the Russian Federation will never change, and that cooperation is truly impressive with many bright spots in the fields of energy, scientific research, investment, agriculture, and human resource training.
Within the framework of attending the General Assembly, VNA and Qatar News Agency QNA signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in exchanging information of all types and delegation exchanges.
The Memorandum of Understanding opens up a new cooperation area of VNA, further enhancing the capacity to coordinate regional and international press forums as well as other cooperation activities in the field of journalism.
The 19th OANA General Assembly also presented the OANA awards to be announced in 2024.
VNA won two first prizes in the article category with the title "A timeless treasure from wild bees" by the group of authors Quynh Trang, Bang Cao, Luong Thu Huong (https://vietnamnews.vn/life-style/1666008/beeswax-a-timeless-treasure-from-wild-bees.html) and first prize in the photo reportage category with the theme "Unique water bridge of Van village" by author An Thanh Dat (https://www.vietnamplus.vn/anh-cua-ttxvn-doat-giai-nhat-giai-thuong-cac-hang-thong-tan-chau-a-thai-binh-duong-post1012798.vnp).
General Director Vu Viet Trang represented the authors to receive these honorable awards.

The photo works of VNA reporters were also selected to be displayed in the OANA photo exhibition opening on June 19, along with the best works of photojournalists from 25 news agencies in the Asia-Pacific region.
"These are truly collected photographs of artistic value," TASS Director General Andrei Kondrashov noted when introducing the exhibition.
The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova at the opening ceremony called the exhibition "a tribute to photographers who are always on the front line."
The two works of VNA attracted much attention from journalists attending the event, contributing to introducing to international friends the image of traditional craft villages as well as the working practices of Vietnamese journalists./.
