“I think it's ridiculous to have a third party,” Trump told reporters before boarding Air Force One to return to Washington. "America has always been a two-party system, and having a third party would just complicate things. Third parties have never been successful. So he can have fun with it, but I think it's ridiculous."
Mr Trump repeated previous claims that Musk - the owner of electric car company Tesla - had turned against him over a new spending bill that would cut subsidies for electric vehicles.
Musk, meanwhile, argues that his opposition was largely due to the bill's potential to increase the federal budget deficit and US public debt.
US Treasury Secretary advises Elon Musk to focus on business
According to AFP, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on July 6 publicly criticized Elon Musk after the technology billionaire announced the formation of a political party, saying that the Tesla and SpaceX CEO should focus on running his business instead of participating in politics.
Asked by CNN whether Mr. Musk's plans to create an “America” party would concern the Trump administration, Mr. Bessent made an indirect criticism of the world's richest man.
“I believe the boards of his companies want him back in charge, which he does better than anyone,” Mr. Bessent said. “I imagine those boards were not happy with yesterday's announcement and will encourage him to focus on business rather than politics .”
Bessent said the principles of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which Mr Musk led for several months during Mr Trump's campaign to cut federal spending and staffing, were “very popular.” But, he added, “If you look at the polls, Elon is not popular.”
Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives, who has long supported Tesla and once advised Musk to leave DOGE, said that forming a political party was the wrong move.
“Musk's deeper involvement in politics and now his attempt to confront the political establishment in Washington is completely contrary to what Tesla investors/shareholders want at this pivotal moment in the Tesla story,” said Mr. Ives.
While core supporters remain firmly behind Musk, many Tesla investors are growing tired of his constant political maneuvering.”
According to Ives, the “initial relief” Tesla shareholders felt after Musk left the Department of Government Efficiency “has now turned sour.” Tesla shares fell 0.85% in after-hours electronic trading on July 6./.
